Hey folks!
My very first mandolin is on its way, thanks in great part to all of you who have provided a great deal of information about quality beginner instruments on my post and on the forums in general.
I called up The Mandolin Store and asked about A-style oval hole instruments in my price range, and like so many of you have already suggested, my feet were firmly set on the path for an Eastman 304. I was assured of a professional setup, and told that the included gig bag was of very good quality (so I found no need to upgrade to a case). I ordered right over the phone - one of the most pleasant buying experiences I've ever had.
I'm very excited!!
On my way home from work I stopped over at the library and picked up some media that was immediately available:
- "The Mandolin in America" by Walter Carter
- "The Ultimate Bluegrass Mandolin Construction Manual" by Roger H. Siminoff
- "Great Mandolin Lessons" (DVD) by Homespun Video
There were also some fretting, chording, and style books, but not actually having a mandolin yet, and being wary of being pulled to a particular style, I left them on the shelf for another day.
One thing I really haven't dug into these forums for yet is some good beginners guides/videos. I'm sure that there's a LOT out there, but I'd certainly welcome any suggestions that you might have for me. I can play some guitar and can read chords/tabs, but I never was much good at reading music itself (nor do I have much inclination to improve!).
I'll be sure to post pics and first impressions once it arrives. Thanks again for all your help!
