Sorry for the dumb question... But are you supposed to glue the nut and bridge in place before stringing??

NO!!!! Well the nut, some I’ve read, put just a small drop or two. But the bridge, it needs to be able to adjust to set the intonation. Mandolin and violin family instrument bridges are held in place by the tension of the strings. There might be some exceptions. Hopefully some of the builders will chime in with better explanation.
Thanks, Rodney!
I use a dot of glue on the nut, but only after stringing up and playing for a while. You need that to come off easily. Bridges always float, at last on arch tops.

When stringing most people do one or two pairs at a time to keep tension on the bridge. A small piece of painters tape can be put down to mark the location if you are concerned it might move. The strings will keep it in place if you are reasonably careful though.
The nut is typically glued to the fingerboard but not fully glued into the slot.

Yep, usually the nut is glued to the end of the fingerboard with a small amount of superglue. Superglue is brittle, so a tap with a screwdriver will usually break the join. The bridge is NOT glued. The nut is typically glued to the fingerboard but not fully glued into the slot.
