Weber Gallatin in Fern Burst - a lot of great sound for not a lot of money.

The first is my Hester A5, built by Gail as a tribute to the Mrs. Griffith Loar (#74003). It features red spruce over red maple with a varnish finish that combine to produce a Loarish tone with basically unlimited headroom. You can lay into it with a heavy hand, and it just keeps giving more and more without ever breaking up on you.

The second is my Passernig A5, designed by Stefan with a more modern silhouette, like an F5 without the points and scroll. It too has a red spruce top and red maple back with a varnish finish, but here those same ingredients yield a darker tonality and more dynamics. It has volume if you reach for it, but it is unusually responsive to a light touch with note clarity and definition.

I have four A style mandolins, but this one is my favorite. It's a 2017 Ken Ratcliff Silverangel with a redwood top.

I stole these pics off of an old thread about this one. I don't own this A-style but I certainly would love to. If it sounds anywhere near as good as it looks … well... Kudos to the lucky picker that ended up with this one.

Collings MT with torrefied Sitka top. One of the best mandolins I've had my hands on, does everything very well. Love the look, the easy playability, and the deep tone. Very light in weight.

Collings really did some neat things on this lower cost model-kept the back/sides satin, glossed the top and the headstock veneer, and did a very pretty thin double white/tortise binding/purfling mix. I think the burst is more a Cremona tone vs the standard MT. Its a real sweet package overall.

I removed the last few frets that I never use, and scooped the fretboard. I play over that area and really like the tone it gives. I have really low action so this gives my pick open range without hitting the board. in time, I intend to inlay something in the scooped area, just haven't decided what, yet.

I really wanted this one. The look and the sound are exactly what I want. It's an MT2 I think although the video says it's an MT. No funds, so no mando but I'll always remember this one.

Silverangel Fan here... I love my SA Econo A (#429). I custom ordered it with a W. Red Cedar top over a one piece Maple back. The "sunburst" is Ken's old violin finish topped with a satin oil varnish. It has loads I've deep dark warm tone and volume.

I also love my Jacobson Nautilus Oval Hole prototype, but I don't have any decent photos of it. I recently put D'Addario Flatwounds on it and have really been enjoying it a lot. I'll try to snap some photos when I get a chance.

Givens mandolin from the 1970's. Not a pretty mandolin but a very dry, cutting tone.

Kirk, To the contrary-- that Givens is to be admired for its warm brown stain and great trim. A looker, in my estimation! I would certainly love to hear her played or play her myself.

I bought this from a cafe member and I couldn't be happier. It is an Afanti A5 (model# PMD-717).
I love the tortoise binding against the amber finish. It plays great and has a great full sound!
