I agree totally with Jill ! Played many top end ovals at Gruhn's costing double of a Girouard and none that I played compared to a Girouard oval !

For a long time I had heard wonderful things about Givens mandolins. This one made me a believer. '77 A5 with a custom golden red finish. I had the Robson tuners and Allen TP put on. It plays up to the Givens reputation.

My main two. 1935 Gibson A-50 with elevated fingerboard on the left. 2018 Collings MT with gloss top and pickguard on the right. Both are special to me. The Gibson has the low end I love and a nice full sound that is great in my duo. The Collings has the modern sound that cuts through. Perfect for my larger band where I have to be heard over others.

Both are better instruments than I deserve as a player and am lucky to own them. Not sure I could easily pick one over the other.

I only own A models. I have had a few scrollish mandolins but they all left the roost.

Here are my main ones: National RM-1, '23 Gibson A-2 snakehead, Brentrup A4C, '83 Flatiron A5-2.

2011 A special that Tom Ellis built for me , with the first Ellis double-flowerpot headstock inlay. Tom cut several and chose this one. Great sounding mandolin & a special one. Case by Bill Collings

    Very cool—a non-sunburst A-4 snakehead. Original?

Sorry about that link above...trying to do this from my phone and I’m technologically challenged...
‘92 Givens. Story is that the original owner played the snot out of it - but strung it for a lefty. Second owner had the top refinished as a black top to cover up the dings and pick marks that were above the strings when returned to right handed playing.
Nice mando - I’ll try to post more pics later.

    Maybe this will work?

On the first page of this thread I posted the '70's Givens mandolin (A5) that I have - it's number 131.
This black top Givens (A6), as I said above, is from '92 - it's number 631.
Significant tonal differences between the two. The A5 has a very cutting, dry, straight-up bluegrass tone. The A6 has a more complex tone...hard to describe.
    Both different but good.

    Kirk

My Northfield Model M, which I've had for about a month now. Love it love it love it! It has a unique (for this model) burst and top binding. Single piece back. I don't know whether someone else ordered these custom options and then backed out, but this was what they had available when I inquired. On Northfield's Instagram page, they said the look was inspired by a pre-war Martin 000-18 they'd seen. Which, as a big fan of Martin 18s, appealed to me in a big way. It's a nice companion to my 00-18! I can't get enough of it.
