Here"s the Jacobson,... very nice indeed!... Much more mid-rangey than the SA for sure!

Givens mandolin from the 1970's. Not a pretty mandolin but a very dry, cutting tone.

If you told me I had to pick one A, I’d have to take the 5th. Chuck, the sound from the Birdseye version of that MT2 from a couple years ago was just electrifying.

I know people say that there isn't any difference, but I just don't like F's. I've only played a couple that I liked and I've just never felt the need to spend the extra money (I probably couldn't have afforded it anyway)... though I am considering an MDA 315... seems like an affordable way to get into a 'dola.

my long time best friend a black top A 1 snakehead 1924, been through the wars. bought it in the late eighties in spokane while passing through. loudest mandolin i have ever hears.

then my refinished A3 snakehead which i got from ebay a few years ago. also a cannon. not quite as loud but very rich as well. and as a refin i call it the world's best busking mandolin.(i am not afraid of taking it out to play in markets or subways)

then my recently acquired old wave. a very modern tone but a fantastic A

for me a real A has an oval sound hole.

my recent trade . f holes i know even i commit the sin of f holes occasionally. so it's a silver angel. asymetrical two point body, very high arced top and deep arched back. very good--for f holes.

given prices today i think silver angles and old waves are under priced. as are late teens and twenties gibson As, which have great old time woody tone. before 1915 they can be good or just ok. the quality improves a lot 1918 to 1921, then the best and most consistent of course are the early twenties.

I used to own this Schofield. A little bright for me, tone-wise, but a strong instrument with beautiful and funky appointments.

Silverangel Fan here... I love my SA Econo A (#429). I custom ordered it with a W. Red Cedar top over a one piece Maple back. The "sunburst" is Ken's old violin finish topped with a satin oil varnish. It has loads I've deep dark warm tone and volume.

I also love my Jacobson Nautilus Oval Hole prototype, but I don't have any decent photos of it. I recently put D'Addario Flatwounds on it and have really been enjoying it a lot. I'll try to snap some photos when I get a chance.

i just acquired a silver angel in a trade. it's nice, i prefer oval sound holes so i don't quite what to make of it. it certainly has balance over the range and the high end up the neck has strong volume as well as the bass. i had a mandolin with a nigh arched carved top that teneded to lose volume up the neck, so this is really nice.
