Thread: Storage: Case vs Hanging on the Wall

It occurred to me that this issue would be strongly affected by climate conditions. I happen to live in a very temperate climate where my instruments live in a detached building that has neither heat nor air conditioner. In the winter, I take the edge off with a small space heater, summer is not a problem except a handful of days. Never too humid nor too dry, described by my luthier as the perfect instrument environment.

Interesting, Br1ck. Where could that be? Wow, I am hoping the my spot is similar. Good for you, either way!

The only excuse for hanging a mandolin is if it participated in a Killer solo! In North Carolina, a capital crime is punishable by lethal injection, and sometimes what I play could be considered a felonious offense, but usually not a capital crime.

So, OP - there are at least two camps here - the "leave them out folks" and the "leave them in their case folks".
Rational arguments to be made on both sides.

I was also wondering if there is any correlation between the "leave them out folks" and the "feel free to modify your mandolin" vs the "keep them in the case" and the "never modify your mandolin" groups.
    Hmmm....

Or maybe I've had too much coffee this morning.

Interesting question. I’m in the case camp, but don’t have a problem modifying my instruments. I actually speed necked my first mandolin myself, though I’d take my good ‘uns to a pro. All of mine get played, and I’m not shy about giving all but a couple to kids to play, without any worry. They were made to be played, I just don’t want any easily preventable damage to occur.

It might be interesting to determine whether price sensitivity plays a role as well. For example, how many owners of Gilchrist, Nugget, and Monteleone, or even Loar-era Gibson mandolins leave them in their case versus leave them out?

    Bingo.

    Case discipline:

    - if a mandolin is not being played it is in its case.
    - if there is an instrument in the case the case is closed.
    - if the case is closed the case is latched.

Only three things to remember. I wish other things were this easy.

If that is so, I am the exception. Unless I am playing or modifying my OM, it's in its case.

wall hangers go where they belong. Musical instruments go in cases - at least in my house!

Then again, it's easier to find placed to squirrel away cases then places to hang instruments.

I have reduced inventory in the last 10 years, however.

Just a thought: common term for a damaged, unplayable instrument is a "wall hanger." Of course, the reference is to decor vs. playability -- banjos turned into clocks, guitars half full of potting soil with philodendron growing out the soundhole -- but still, when you say your favorite Gibson is a "wall hanger," that sorta implies...somethin'...

Third option, I've got a couple of those guitar case thingy's that unfold into a guitar rack that holds 4-6 guitars each, depending on if they are electric or acoustic or a combination. Like I say, the instruments are safe, but handy.

I have a Loar-era Gibson and it stays in its case when I'm not actively playing it. I also have a $49 Rogue which also stays in its case (gig bag) when I'm not playing it. I also roll my car windows all the way up when I'm not driving it, even it it's 130 degrees in the shade. I had a car ruined when rain got in during a hot summer once and the resultant mildew smell never went away. I've certainly had mandolins damaged when I didn't put them away. But that's my decision; i'd never insist someone else do things simply because I do them.

I have three rambunctious boys. Rule number one for ALL instruments- if it's not being played, it's in the case. Otherwise, I'll have broken instruments.
