I am really happy with my Nava archtop and for a different sound my Calace bowl back. There was a gorgeous part finished mandolin that I saw as I was passing a violin shop in Sorrento a few years ago, a bowl back with a scalloped bowl. I had a chat with the builder but stupidly didn't get his name, so that's the one that got away.

I would go with the earlier choice of a Sobell OM, I like my Buchanan but the Sobell I played just sung.

Shame you are in the US John Berlotti, I have a Ceccherini I could be persuaded to part with.

Even dream mandolins look like a good deal when you see an auction estimate of 3,000 - 5,000 for just the scroll of a violin.

Violins are a whole other planet. You can easily spend $8k on a bow (with no hair!).
Good Advice: Play before you pay, and know your product and your market.

the best mandolin i ever played was a presentation model, very fancy two point body with oval sound hole, made by oliver apitius in canada. i like oval sounf holes by far the best. his f hole mandolins are also fantastic if that's your thing.

i played an ellis f 5 copy that was pretty close, and a couple of heiden's that were fantastic as well. but all out of my price range
