That is one ingredient in my "secret sauce." There are a number of innovations regarding tone that I have developed over the years. I happen to have just talked about some of them on the blog page of my website. If you'd like to know more, here's a link.

I really felt legitimized when Downbeat Magazine asked to do a review of my "Yorkville" model for their upcoming July issue. (The Yorkville is just an uptown version of my J-models. Tuxedo required.) I'm doing all I can to boost the recognition of the mandolin as a serious jazz instrument. I have been in contact with Canada's only 24/7 jazz radio station in the hopes of getting them to play more (some) mandolin music and I think I'm making inroads. Here's a link if you would like to petition them. https://jazz.fm/

In the meantime, here are a few more images of Tom's Club Jazz.

Your work and this model of mandolin has always impressed me and some day I will order one!

The Club Jazz has 10% more air volume than an F5 and a larger vibrating area of the top. This results in a main air resonance of a 4th octave C which gives it more warmth and sustain than my F models. The scale length is the same, 355mm (just shy of 14").

Truly incredible stuff! Would love to see a 15+ inch scale length 5 string version of this with a floating pickup!

What a fantastic mandolin. Will you put a pick up on it to play with the voice at all plugged in?

Hi, Jamie, I have no plans to electrify this sweetheart. I use a Collings MF workhorse, to play live. I use a dual output combination: a dpa 4099 mini condensor mic, and a K&K Twin internal, run thru a Grace Felix, into a Fishman 330 vertical array. Best quality sound I can get, amplified. (that I’m aware of). Still not nearly as nice as a pure acoustic sound...

You could even use a Dearmound Rhythm Chief reissue guitar pickup on it. (I use one on a five string crystal forest flat-top and it sounds amazing!)

Will a Tone-Gard fit The Club Jazz?
Play that which you feel is groovy, get down with your bad self, and shake your money maker if it makes sense for you to do so.

    Hi Tomando,
Your mandolin is gorgeous! I think is has been made just after or just before mine (13019).
Indeed, Oliver is such a lovely guy!
