Default Eurovision song contest worst song?

The UK had one of it’s greatest songs yet, and beautifully sung, but made it right to the bottom with 11 points. The winner got 498 points.

Not the worst song I heard. But it is missing mandolins real bad!

I thought that Brexit would be the end of the fiasco but I may be mistaken. Israel? Australia? - in Europe! Fortunately I was abroad (well Scotland) this year so couldn’t be tempted to watch it. It’s never been the same since the days of Terry Wogan who seemd to hold the whole thing in low regard and also once played one of our mandolin recordings on his breakfast radio show!

The Eurovision Song Contest goes all the way back to 1956!
I looked through some of the songs on YouTube, and the singer or singers almost invariably sing on their own -no instruments. (Though I seem to remember as a kid seeing, I think Greeks, singing and playing some really cool instruments. I remember thinking, wow, I want to do that!)
Here’s a sweet song from Norway (1966!) played with a guitar.

Eurovision has long ceased to be about the music (whatever you think of its merits or otherwise) and all about the politics; a sort of UN with glitterballs and dry ice. Everyone votes along political lines with near neighbours and nobody votes for the UK.

i remember The Allisons 'Are you sure' way back mid 50s and used to enjoy the whole thing where you would get a bit folk style stuff with mandolins, bouzoukis, acoustic style stuff and of course Lulu and others. I liked the song Hallelulia winner (not by UK) but it's now viewed as glitz and glam and no one takes it seriously with all the political votes. I don't know any serious musicians who watch it and I no longer watch it. The whole thing should be about THE BEST SONG. What constitutes that? Certainly not the glitz and glam. The performance obviously comes very much into it but a really good melody and chorus which can be sung by your average person is high on the list for me. If the melody covers around 2 octaves or more and Joe Public can't sing it then it doesn't work for me.

It is hard to live here and avoid it completely, but I managed to keep my exposure down to a couple minutes.

Elvis Costello once said something like “If you can’t play a song with just an acoustic guitar and nothing else, it isn’t a song.”

I’m thinking of entering next year for Germany, my new homeland. Couldn’t do much worse, and I’d get sympathy votes (“Hey! Look at the old fat bald guy!”)

Not that I've been following, but this 2015 Finnish punk blast always seemed like the best possible Eurovision song:

Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät - Aina Mun Pitää (Finland) - LIVE at Eurovision 2015: Semi-Final 1
    https://youtu.be/v4Y0HOPL5GU

    Translation:

I always have to clean up
I always have to do the dishes
I always have to go to the work
I always have to go to the doctor
I'm not allowed to go to the computer
    Not allowed to watch television
I'm even not allowed to see my friends
I always have to be at home
I always have to do tasks
I always have to eat well
I always have to drink well
I'm not allowed to eat candy
    Not allowed to drink soda
I'm even not allowed to drink alcohol
    I always have to rest
    I always have to sleep
I always have to wake up
I always have to go to the shower

    but no mandolins at all.

    I love that punk melody!
One of the lines in the verse should have been:
I always have to sing in the same key as my bass player.

Here he is wearing an avant-garde subminiature-mandolin hat while playing a rare Rogue mando-bass (left-handed!). Click pic to make larger:

Israel is part of Eurovision because it, with Jordan Lebanon Syria and the northern part of Saudi Arabia, are in the European Broadcasting Area which also incudes parts of North Africa hence membership of organisations in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.
Australia had to be specially invited as it is only an Associate member.

No, no, no, Australia was invited because they didn’t want the UK to win all the prizes.

-so what would the show be like if the contestants could only use trad instruments? And no winners, just prizes for lots of different categories, costumes, scales, modes etc.
