    Default Strap button on neck?

I haven't seen this before, but a Kimble 2 point on the Mandomutt site has a strap button on the neck? I worry about a strap button getting in the way in normal positions on the A bodies, but this looks to definitely be a problem unless you only plan to play on lower positions.

[After looking at some other pictures, maybe this isn't as extreme as I originally thought. Still would give me pause.]

Here's another Kimble mando on the same site with the button in a similar location.

I have a button on my mandolin in a similar spot, I have been surprised at how little it bothers me when playing. YMMV.

I find that it really secures my mandolin in a good position for playing and frees up my left wrist for technique and not supporting the mandolin [or holding it in ideal position].

I bet a luthier could remove it if desired, though even if refilled I'm guessing you'll always be able to see it was there.

I would find that a real problem for playing up high on the neck. I've usually had a button put right on the back, into the heel of the neck. It's out of the way and very solid there. Works fine as long as you can still lay the instrument down flat on a tabletop without the button touching anything (which it never has).

I've had the same arrangement on a Mowry A and one or two other mandolins.

I've had 3 or 4 A-style mandolins with this placement of button. No problem at all. The button seems to fall into the hollow of my fingers, but not actually bumping into the fingers significantly.
In fact, I have that mando above now. No problems at all!!

Yep I’ve done that too. I’ve still not put an upper strap button on a good mandolin. (I put one on a Rogue for my son.)

The picture of the second Kimble was my Mandolin up to a month ago ,and it was a great one !
This is the correct place to install a strap button on a A-5 if you are going to do it .
As told to me by the Ellis Mandolin Company ,I’m not about to argue with Tom .

I guess I need to see (and play) a mando with the strap button in this location. I just can't see how a button (and strap) at that location wouldn't get in the way. Since BOTH Kimbles have the buttons in the same basic location, it MUST be ok somehow.

If your left hand technique is correct, you won't notice the button in daily play. If you regularly play above the 15th fret, you might notice it.

They’re not on the neck as such they’re on the heel and that’s the way Will Kimble fits them. For those who “think” they’ll get in the way, could I ask if they’ve ever actually tried it? Personally I have no problem. Go up the neck an inch further and the mandolin body gets in the way! This subject has been discussed to death.

There’s really no good place for a strap button on an A5, but I find that to be the least of all evils. You can put them on the heel button on the back, but that’s an even more painful (emotionally) place to drill. I’d rather see a strap around the headstock behind the nut or around the body under the extension, but from a player’s perspective neither is ideal...

I have no problem at all with that location.
