Thread: Frank’s Crank or??

    Default Frank’s Crank or??

Looking for a high quality string winder for mandolin and hoping for suggestions. A Frank’s Crank would be amazing but apparently he hasn’t been making them for some time. Is there anything out there that’s somewhat on par or equivalent? Thanks.

Waverly Anniversary String Winders seem to be nice, they are kind of pricey.

Worth every penny. Made by Waverly so you know they’re good.

I have the Waverly winder in ebony, and have used it a couple of times. Works well. I got it at a sale price from StewMac, but it was still pricey.

There are probably others similar to the Waverly available if you do some searching.

There are also a number of sources for all-wood winders, several of which show up in the Classifieds from time to time. Dudenbostel and Wildwood are two names that come to mind. Have not tried either one, so I can't say anything other than I've seen them here.

    Good luck.

Nicolo Alessi also makes beautifully machines string winders that actually have bearings inside them and are so smooth you feel like you are driving a nice old Ferrarri.

I have two of Lynn Dudenbostel's winders: One for guitar (maple) and one for mandolin (cherry). Lynn usually puts an ad up in the classifieds a few times a year and hopefully, he will soon list a few for holiday gifts. They are the best winders I have ever had or could ever hope for. Next best thing to owning a Dudenbostel mandolin or guitar

i have two of the Dudenbostel winders and they fit and work excellent. an extra "benefit" to them is that you can act casual and claim you have a Dudenbostel at home, then make a slow hasty exit so nobody starts asking questions.

i have a couple of these from MusicNomad and they fit and work excellent as well. they are made of a "rubber like" feeling material and will not marr or damage anything in the event you bang it into your instrument. has a bearing in the handle so it works very smooth.

I like the Music Nomads one the best.
Other winders annoyingly bump into the other buttons.
