I saw that it was "sold," but figured it was just the typical placeholder for a new product. Stores like Elderly and The Mandolin Store show lots of instruments that are "sold" or "coming soon" or "out of stock." Still, I had seen forum questions about price and specs, and this was the first store that I have seen that had both. (The Northfield web page has all the info now, too.)

Well you knew it was going to be a higher price point than anything that came before. Smart business to get people used to them being a more upscale brand.

I was interested to note the simplicity of Northfield's pricing scale on F5's. "Entry" F5S at $3k, Big Mon at $4500, Artist at $6k, and 4th Gen at $7500. Each step is $1500.

Folks at Winter NAMM didn't seem to share your sentiment when reacting to the new model.

I'm eager for more folks to try out this new model. I've been looking at some luthiers who have their top models starting at about $8700, and from that perspective, $7500 doesn't seem outrageous.

Exactly. The guys at Northfield have made (and are continuously making) their reputation the old-fashioned way... they EARN it! An impressive operation all the way around...

We do have members from around the world on this forum. I suspect the "buy AMERICAN" slogan isn't as popular with many of them, lol.

My daughter played a Chinese viola from the eighth grade through her doctorate and the first five years of here performing career. Picked from eight violas priced to $8500, it was the best one of the lot. Craftsmen are craftsmen, regardless of the country they are crafted in. If anyone chooses to not consider a foreign built instrument, that is a valid and personal choice, but I have played quite a few Northfields and they stand up on there own. I would not hesitate to buy one IF I felt it was the one for me, or it was so close price became the deciding factor.

I have #268 built in 2014, it’s 4 years old now and it held its own again a new artist model a friend had last year. I suspect these 4th gens are really special.

It’s not an import in the way implied, it’s made in a small shop by 2-3 people in China and about the same number in Michigan.

Why wouldn’t I want to buy the best I can afford? Limiting myself to “insert your country here” doesn’t always get me the best product or value.
