Thread: Do people ever change their strings?

So since I broke one and am about to order a set.... I'm a beginner. I played the viola for decades, but the mandolin for less than a year, and this string stuff is completely different (different physics, different culture...). Do you change them all at once (1 string at a time so it doesn't fall apart like George with Betsy's xylophone)? You can change out one viola string at a time (they last longer, and changing the whole set can be cost prohibitive), but at $6/set, it seems like I should just do them all.

I suggest do them all at the same time, for many reasons.

Change them all at the same time, but not all at the same time, if you get my meaning. Replace all 8 strings, but take them off in pairs and replace them before taking off the next pair -- unless you either mark the bridge (which you can do with post-in notes) or want to clean the whole thing and then re-set/re-intonate at the bridge. Seriously, the more you do it, the less weird it becomes.

I just do one string at a time. I never take them all off at once unless a repair is needed. As mentioned change them all tho.

I was thinking about how people change their strings, I see a lot do it in pairs. Now and then I pull them all and use a pice of blue painters tape to hold the bridge in place that way I can clean it up good. Normally though I change one string in each pair because I like to hear how the new compare to the old. I have found this helps me decide how often I want to change whichever brand I am using at that time.

Thanks! I dragged my feet a while and had my teacher do one over because I wasn't getting it - but I finally changed them all over - I went with light when I had had medium - and I can't love them more.

It's even pretty again (the old strings were so gross and I had no idea until I saw the new ones side by side).

I'll be changing mine over this week or so to put on coated strings for the summer and CIAW. I decided to pick up fiddle (sort of) and have a set of strings for that instrument that appears kind of intimidating. But i figure, if I can change mandolin strings, I should be able to change fiddle strings, right?

Randi, fiddle strings are way easier than mandolin. Remember to change them one at a time to maintain pressure on the sound post. If the post falls over you're in trouble. A pair of needle nose pliers helps a lot with threading the string through the tuning peg.
