Thread: Taylor Hardbag for longscale mandola/short scale octave mandolin

Default Taylor Hardbag for longscale mandola/short scale octave mandolin

I recently bought a used Davy Stuart long scale mandola (18 inch scale). Incredible value. I love the instrument. Came in a full size banjo hard case. Not so great.

Folks looking for a gig bag for these short octave/long mandola type instruments might consider a Taylor Mini Hard Bag.

It's smaller and lighter than a Reunion Blues or Access Stage three.

It has a moveable neck support and it's well padded.

We added a little velcro so we could move the neck support lower and some memory foam at the bottom. The 18" scale Davy Stuart is pretty happy in her new home! A 20" scale octave might fit without any modifications.

It's obligatory that someone will tout a Pegasus/Carlton/Hoffee as better. Yep. But this very light, more protective than a gig bag, readily available and reasonably cheap. I'm happy!
It's worth mentioning that this is the upgraded Taylor Hard Bag, NOT the Taylor Gig Bag. Big difference between the two.

I owned a Taylor Mini bass for a year or so. I can vouch for the quality of the bag. Plus it has a front pouch big enough for a notebook of sheet music, and backpack straps.

I've also had good luck with the gig bag sold with Little Martin guitars. When the manufacturer only provides a soft fabric case for one of their models, apparently they go to some trouble to make it a good one.

i have one of those i picked up at a garage sale. i m a case monster. i find tenor banjo cases make great hard shell cases for octave, citterns, waldzithers etc. the main thing is the very narrow ones haven't room for the head stock and tuners. you need the wider ones, but those with the arch top are very strong. i recently found two--so hallaljullah i got cases for everything and an extra or two!!! also found a spare 17 inch wide jumbo guitar case--really deep for a big acoustic. nice to have a spare jumbo case.

i also have a martin travel guitar case. soft but nicely padded. very clean. at the local pawn shop.

i agree on the tenor banjo cases but there aren't too many out there. Seems like a lot of manufacturers just make a banjo case. There is a TKL tenor hardshell case. Reunion Blues used to make a tenor hard bag but I think it's discontinued.

We play 12 hour days at a Ren Fest so a light case is important!

If you want a cheap, worthy alternative to the Taylor Mini Hardbag, if you prefer a dark charcoal grey and don't mind the pocket being a bit smaller (it will hold a folder of 8.5 x 11 sheet music, but not a notebook), this Music Area brand 36" guitar bag is available for less than half the price of the Taylor, and gets nice reviews. I was so intrigued that at that low price, I bought one myself on impulse. It's very sturdy and lightweight, with waterproof 900 denier covering, 20mm padding, velvety cloth interior, a movable velcro-ed neck support, and contoured, padded backpack straps.

The advertisement screams "Chinese pride" - there is even a nifty enameled Chinese logo badge on the pocket that I can't read - but in this case (pun intended), they do have a product to be proud of. NFI here, just a satisfied purchaser. Many pictures at the above link. Here are the internal measurements:

Thought that said Taylor Handbag, someone making mandolin-themed purses to match specific mandolins. You know, like how purses match shoes. Anyway, looks good.
