Default Man crosses the Atlantic in a barrel - with mando

"If it was nice, I swam, and dove underneath the barrel to catch a fish, sea bream, to supplement my meal.

I made a breakfast in the morning, and a nice dinner in the evening. I had a lot of time to write my book. I played a lot of bluegrass on my mandolin."

Yet he didn't say a word about the kind of mandolin and the strings he uses and his preferred pick and the issue of heat and humidity on the mandolin...

Imagine having 127 days to play without anyone complaining about you doing anything else

A mando-themed interview would be an interesting read for sure.

You're right and it's strange he didn't talk about whether his wife would kill him if he bought another mandolin...

As barrel's go, that one is the "yacht" of barrels......IMHO.

I believe I detected a solar panel in one of the pictures..........

    Fun stuff!

It could have been his desert island mandolin! A carbon fiber model perhaps?

She's the one who sent him off in the barrel! There's only so much mandolin a marriage can take!

That isn't the way Bill did it!

He would have had a mule pull the boat?

That's one way to be the best mandolin player for hundreds of miles.

It's really not that big of an accomplishment. Now if he were able to make it for 127 days stuck with a banjo, that would be incredible

For those of a certain generation, my youth was fueled with images of Jacques Cousteau driving his bathyscaphe, a miniature yellow submarine for scientists, under the ocean depths....................

Sounds like this Frenchman may have been similarly inspired by his countryman.....

Another one I remember, National Geographic sponsored one-man expedition was the story of Dove, the sailboat and its 16-year old captain who made a 5-year journey around the world starting in the mid 60's......

Yes but what if he were to tie up five steel piano wires tight like a washing line inside the barrel? He would be sailing INSIDE a banjo!
