Robert Johnson's mother, describing blues musicians:
"I never did have no trouble with him until he got big enough to be round with bigger boys and off from home. Then he used to follow all these harp blowers, mandoleen (sic) and guitar players."

    Yeah, yeah.
    Haters!

    I like my banjos.

Last night my banjo playing friend added a banjo head with a built in pick up to her John Hartford.
She asked me if it sounded good. Unfortunately, it still sounded just like a banjo, but louder.

Cant we talk about bongos and melodeons?

I am learning 5-string and have a Slingerland tenor on the way. There’s lots of work here with tenor - the players are dying off and the trad bands are getting desperate (trad is very popular here).

I’m having more fun playing banjo than I have had in quite some time. I suspect, though, that banjo players have more fun than banjo listeners. And I’m certain my neighbors are ready to kill me. You know the routine: ‘play this roll 7000 times evenly and smoothly, gradually increasing the tempo until you can play it for 5 minutes straight at 300 bpm with no mistakes. Now do it again.’

The banjo jokes are great - but in all honesty, I have great respect for banjo players. I tried learning the instrument back in the 80's, but just couldn't get down the right hand dexterity. (I could kind of do the Grandpa Jones/Frailing style, but the 3-finger/Scruggs style completely alluded me.)

So - banjo players of the world . . . I salute you!

Just the opposite for me. I bought a banjo to learn clawhammer, but it’s such a bizarre technique I can’t quite get it. Many many years of ragtime guitar make the Scruggs style relatively straightforward for me, though.

An old friend is a very good plectrum player; he is very impressive. He did an album of Scott Joplin compositions, for example.

I was once trying to learn frailing in Brazil with a banjo I’d bought from Gryphon in Palo Alto, CA. (I had immediately fallen in love with Oldtime, had heard Doc Watson and went straight to the shop and bought the banjo the day before my flight out).
Once in Brazil I went to a violin (mainly) music teacher. My friends there said he was really good, knew all types of music. So I asked him if he could help. He said yes, no problem, and then told me he had never seen a five string up close before. Then I showed him the notation and he looked confounded.
-But this isn’t music, he said, the only time you stop is at the end. You need ‘silêncio’ in the middle.
    -so you can’t help me?
    -I can teach you violin!

I like a well-played banjo, and the jam I attend when I can has a woman in it that is a SUPER banjo player, to the point I even considered trying to learn. Then I decided that it will take the rest of my life to get good at mandolin, and I will never have enough time to get good on banjo too.
