Jacobson Nautilus Mandolin #39 - Ziricote and Birdseye

Hello folks,
The last year has been interesting, full of a lot of changes for us. I'm building mostly as therapy these days, but am really grateful I get to work with awesome woods and make cool stuff like this, even if it does take a while.

I probably won't be building any more Nautilus mandolins for some time, if ever, unless there's a specific demand for them. When you move to a new shop, you usually get rid of a lot of jigs and fixtures, which have done OK for while they've been there.

But I've learned so much since I geared up to start making these, it's time to rethink a bunch of things. I'll be doing that while I make some bigger mandolin-like instruments for some very patient Cafe members.

This is a cool instrument, though.

Sitka spruce top, parallel tone bars, offset oval holes
Super awesome ziricote sides, fretboard, neck, bridge, headstock overlay
Incredible birdseye maple back

Marty, I am fortunate to play your #37 Koi themed mandolin every day. With Thomastik strings it is a great instrument to work on the Bach Violin Sonatas and Cello Suites.

Hi Ron, Should be back on the carbon fiber project after a couple more builds. By the end of the year for sure. There's only one real hurdle left, which is resin selection. The resin I've been using starts to deform at about 120F, which means you can't leave the mandolin in a hot car. One of the main attractions for a CF mandolin is the ability to leave it in a hot car in the desert in the Middle East (not kidding, that's a real request from a real customer). So I need to select a resin and postcure process, The Rest is Just DetailsTM.
