    Default Mid-range Case Recommendations

I just upgraded to a 1990 Flatiron Performer F and found the original case to be lacking (i.e. loose fit and oddly balanced heav at the headstock end). I have a spare standard Eastman case (the one that comes with a MD515) that works well enough for now. I'd like to hear recommendations on the next step up in a case, somewhere between this current setup and the Calton/Hoffee/Pegasus, which are out of my price range. Ideally, $250 or below, but I'm not opposed to spending a little more if it's worth it.

    Thank you all in advance!

I have not used one but these look nice and seem fairly priced.

I'm a big fan of my Northfield Airloom case. At $399 it's a little above your price range but well below the Carlton range. Any questions about my experience with it, just ask!

You might also look at the Airloom Recurve which fits your price range. Looks nice but I have no experience with it.

I also owned a Hiscox case that I thought was a good case.

The Silver Creek Vintage F Style Mandolin case gets my vote. https://www.musiciansfriend.com/acce...SABEgJ31PD_BwE Second would be The TKL F shaped case. R/ https://www.google.com/search?q=TKL+...73545920640268

I recently bought a Crossrock Fiberglass case and really like it. It has backpack straps for festivals or airports or whatever. They usually run around $185 on Amazon, but I found one at around $133 in a Amazon Warehouse deal. Good value for the money.

I was eying the Airloom, but it is in the high end for me. I might just save up and get one.

Hiscox has come up in my searches. Looks like a good option.

I recently bought the Superior Deluxe A-style case for my Silverangeland am very pleased. I'm not sure what the F-style costs, but the A cost me just over $110.

Here is a review I wrote of it: https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/t...xe+case+review

It looks like the F-style may be rectangular: Superior CD-1522 Deluxe Hardshell Oblong F Model Mandolin Case https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0052XXBPG..._YBbPCbWAG5TA7

DO NOT BUY from Instrument Alley... their Customer service is extremely lacking.

Hiscox is my favorite at any price. Light, kind to the instrument, and protective.

Crossrock accommodate a range of sizes. It ships with an extra foam piece that you can use to snug it up. I leave the Tone-Guard on my mandolins and the Crossrock handles that well also.
I also like how the top has padding over the tailpiece and the neck to secure the instrument. Not over the bridge like the Superior fiberglass case does.

One other idea would be to find a Collings case. They are made by TXL and seem a little more solid than a standard TXL case. They have upgraded hinges, a very nice handle and the interior is much nicer. Folks with a higher end Collings often upgrade to a better case so you can pickup a like new used one for $150-200 range.

The Superior fiberglass I just got at Amazon has padding over the neck, and padding on both sides of the bridge but its out on the edges by the F-holes. Nothing directly over the bridge. I like it. About 160.00 from Amazon. Have a Hiscox I got a good deal on at Musicians Friend. 15% off plus i some "points." I think it make the usual $219.00 case around 165.00. The Collings USA made F case I have is real nice also.

I’m a big fan of the new Northfield case. It travels well, has enough room for a tonegaurd, holds my Gibson securely, and just looks awesome.

I had a spare Travelite laying around that I was trying to sell. Actually glad now it didn't sell. I got a mandolin in a cash/trade. It came in one of the cheapest cases I've ever seen. I ended up putting it in the Travelite and giving away that cheap, unnamed case. The Travelite is fine. I plan on taking that mandolin to Swannanoa in July, where Mike Marshall will be one of my instructors.
