NMC - David Gilmour Instrument auction at Christies

David Gilmour's Instrument collection is going up for sale at Christies.
Just wanted to post about this auction as there are a ton of great instruments for sale.
Lots of very nice old Strats and Teles, along with some cool Martins.
(Yes, I know there are no mandolins).

Just thought it was an interesting group of instruments.
The prices are not totally crazy either.
Most seem fair appraisal for instruments even if owned by David Gilmour.

I am saved from the shame of the "no mandolin content"...
Yeah that one is cool.

I also like the sitar they are selling.
The sitar is by a very good well know maker and it is $1000-1,500, which is about the right price.
Sitars are much more affordable than western instruments for what you get.
Although, they did get the name of the maker wrong.
They put "Kaptan Chand" and it should be "Kartar Chand"

Correct me if I am wrong but these are estimates of what they will sell for. might be "reasonable" if they actually realize that but my experience is that they usually estimate reasonably to entice bidders. Also there is usually a hefty bidder's premium (25%) vyou have to be aware of when bidding.

In addition, you only need one other bidder crazier than you to bring the price beyond what you would want to pay. OTOH it is nice to look at this collection. Thanks for the link.

There is a Fender "mandocaster" mandolin.... which has a very generous estimate, however it is a ver yearly one

As Jim says, they are only “estimates”, and it will depend upon what the collectors market makes of the sale.

I’m not sure whether the instruments are supposed to be “as played” by Mr Gilmour or he’s just clearing out the garage but there are a couple of left handers amongst them and I’m not sure that he’s renowned for being ambidextrous; although I’ve always said that I’d give my right arm to be so!

Looks like a real nice collection. I'm sure Gilmour, like most of us, is a fan of the guitar and has purchased many over the years -- some were probably used more than others in recording and on stage. One would think the instruments that would be most iconic to Gilmour would be ones that can be readily seen in videos and on album photos. Less thrilling, IMHO, would be instruments he "owned" but never was known to have used. Just a thought.

I say that knowing that while I worked at a vintage store, Eric Clapton came in and bought about a dozen cheap, but cool guitars -- Kays, Truetone, Harmony -- nothing over $300-400 each. We kinda shrugged our shoulders, "why would he want this stuff when he has "real" 50's and 60's Fenders and Gibsons?" This was about 20 years ago, before his big "charity" auction.......of course, Blackie, Brownie, and others sold (for big money) along with these recently purchased lesser guitars OWNED BY ERIC CLAPTON. And, yes, technically he did own them. Were they ever stage played or even strummed by him.......doubtful.

I have to say I want the black strat.
Although, if I had the $150,000 for the strat, I would have a hard time not spending it on a Loar.
I guess I need $300,000 to spend on instruments I don't really need.
I need to look through my stuff and come up with $300,000 worth of stuff to sell...
