IMHO you made a wise decision to keep a great-sounding though "distressed" mandolin at an excellent price.
Also IMHO, the seller was a bit weasel-y; if he considered the Flatiron "unblemished" he has a much different definition of the term, than most of us.

I would be more disappointed if it showed up pristine and sounded meh. You were right to get some kickback - it will effect resale.
For me - if it sounds and plays nice - finish cracks are not a deal breaker like tone. Similar to moderate to heavy use wear. If its a a good sounding mandolin you won't stay disappointed long. I like that my mandolins (save one) are festival friendly while looking nice still.
