    Default RIP Dick Dale

The king of the surf guitar. The musicians of my youth seem to be leaving us.

Had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Dale live. I think maybe it was 2007 or so? At the Birchmere theatre in suburban Washington, D.C. it was a heck of a show. Just listening to his records doesn’t do him justice. He was truly one of a kind. And loud! It had to be the loudest concert I’ve ever been too. And it was intentional. He told the audience “I’m here to make your ears bleed!” And I think he came close. Another thing about a live show by Mr. Dale is that, and this is hard to put into words, he just exuded manliness. At that show the testosterone was so thick you could cut it with a knife. When you’ve seen him live, you appreciate how athletic, how muscular his playing style was. After the show he graciously signed autographs for everyone who wanted them, and that was practically everybody. It’s a treasured possession in our house, right up there with our Les Paul autographs (saw him twice at the Iridium club, NYC). I remember thinking at that show how healthy and vigorous he seemed in his late 60’s. Very sad to hear of his health problems and death. There will never be another like him.

Allen, your link goes to an eBay auction for an F-5 owned by Duane Eddy, not Dick Dale.

I never knew Mr. Dale to be a mandolinists, but he always claimed he could play “all the instruments”. In his live show he played drums and trumpet as well as guitar to prove it. But that leaves out a considerable number of instruments, yes?

Dick Dale is one of the forces behind the 100 watt Fender amps. He went to Leo and said more, more, more. I believe the Showman stacks were the result.

Dick Dale was a force of nature, and should be remembered here as a master tremelo player!
Also, the scales and techniques he used to build his surf sound (not including the guitar, reverb and amp) are partly lifted from Mediterranean music, and the oud playing of his uncle in particular. It is also often overlooked that "Miserlou" is an Eastern Mediterranean folk tune. I will definitely miss Mr. Dale!
