Took me a while, but I remembered, and I even found the old threads(!).
JML is J. Mark Lane, and his ideas are outlined in these old threads:

I too have liked all of the Taggarts I have seen.
I would also be interested in seeing more work from the shops of the following:
The lady Luthier out west who's name I can't remember. (She used to post on here very often)
    Harlan
    Will Kimble
    Red Diamond
    Eric Hanson

You're probably thinking of Gail Hester.

I doubt you can get Gail to build an F5 for $5K any longer. The people on her list are paying more than that.
Emando.com: More than you wanted to know about electric mandolins.

Andrew Mowry (matching F5 and K4 mandocello)
    Dan Voight
    Outlier
    Campanella Strings

Alright, so only 1 makes it in under the $5K limit, and I double one up. But it's only pretend money, right?

I guess I'm in the position of having made that dream come true. Having gone through many and at one time having around 20 at home my personal instruments now are Old Wave (melon, and 2 octaves) Brentrup (Eclipse V8) and Mowry (A5 custom). As to adding two more I will have a think about that.

Hah! JML is long gone from the mandolin scene -- I actually met him and spent a nice few hours hanging. I think he concentrated on keyboards. Thanks, John for refreshing my memory.

I'm sure his financial advisor is thrilled he left the mandolin world, it's an expensive place to be. Funny that JML should come up, I was going back to some of the old threads and he was so active. I miss guys like him, Mr. Peck, Shayne, Hans, etc...
