Thread: Mid-Mo M1 on German E-Bay

    Default Mid-Mo M1 on German E-Bay

    Currently, there's a Mid-Mo M1 mandolin for 499 Euros on German E-Bay.

Now, a flattop is the one thing missing in my little mando collection.
I had a look at the Big Muddy website, but they do not offer a spruce/mahogany mandolin at the moment, only spruce/walnut, spruce rosewood or spruce/maple...
So, my question: are there any owner's of the M1 spruce/mahogany mandolin present, who could talk to me about the sound of this mandolin.
I plan to use it predominantly for classical, and folksy playing, rather little BG, something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5mbj8YzKj0

I started on a Mid-Mo M0, spruce over mahogany but unbound, and it really got me hooked. It had a certain brightness that all flattops do but with a hint more warmth from the mahogany. I think that it would excel at folksy playing, comfortably handle classical, and even suffice for rather little BG around the house. It will also offer incredible value at that price point.

I have a Mid-Mo M-0W, which is the same mandolin but without binding, and with a slightly wider fretboard. I use it regularly in my Youtube recordings. Each of my clips has a list of the instruments in the description, so if you check for the Mid-Mo you'll get a good idea of how it sounds. Here is are some where the Mid-Mo is the featured mandolin:

    Pop/Jazz:

    Amado Mio
    Vincent
    Moscow Nights
    Slow Boat To China
    Fly Me To The Moon

    Early Music:

    Come With Me My Giselle
    Southernes Pavin
Thomas Morley: Six Canzonets To Three Mandolins

    Folk/Celtic:

At The Close Of An Irish Day
    The Lady Of The Lake
    Miss McMurray
    Azalea Waltz

Thanks pheffernan, thanks Martin! I contacted the seller and am waiting for his answers to some questions concerning the age of the mandolin and the fretwear. But it sounds real good on Martin's Youtube clips, so if these details are OK, I think I'm going to buy it.
A question to pheffernan: How would you say it compares to a Poe Scout mandolin?

That’s a tough comparison. My Poe looks better; of course, it was designed as a tribute to the Gibson Alrite. For me, it also plays better, but then I told Andy my preferences for neck profile, compound radius, and stainless steel frets. And then, I like the tone better, though I have generally preferred the fuller tone of pancakes to flattops with more of a teardrop shape. It is important to note at this point that I bought my Mid-Mo (used) off the internet for about 1/3 the price of my Scout (new), which was a custom build.
