Default Purcell: They Tell Us That You Mighty Powers

Henry Purcell (1659-1695): "The Indian Queen" (1695)
Aria: They Tell Us That You Might Powers

This is an aria from Purcell's unfinished semi-opera "The Indian Queen". My recording is based on an arrangement for string quartet and soprano voice or flute, which I found at musescore.org:

As I play all parts on mandolin familiy instrument, I wanted to have a tonal contrast between the first violin and the vocal part, which share the melodic content between them. I have approached this by playing the voal part on a nylgut-strung four-string bowlback uke (in mandolin tuning), to contrast with the vintage Ceccherini bowlback that alternates the melody line with the vocal.

This tune has one of the most melodic tunes of any Baroque piece I know and it's a joy to play on mandolin.
