I think you can be pretty sure it is probably within a year or two of 1921. Mine has 1921 written in what I assume is William Place's handwriting. Other ones I dont' habe clear photos of the labels or else cannot see any date written. However, 114 and 204 (mine) seem to be labelled as 1921 so it is possible that a separation of 90 between two SN's are still in the same year. We could say yours was from 1922-1923 and that might be a decent educated guess.

Jim, my Bacon Artist is signed, dated 1921 with a serial number of 161. Can you give me any info on the 161 that you have listed?

I pulled the jpegs from an eBay listing in 2010. Here's the listing description:
Minty 1920's BACON MANDOLIN Signed William Place Jr.
    Serial #161 w/Original Case It's Outstanding!! NO/RES

ESW presents, from a fine San Diego estate, this original 1920's Bacon Mandolin with the signed William Place Jr. label serial number 161. If you have been waiting for an outstanding original example this is the one. It looks to be un-restored with it's original case. New strings just installed. Measures just over 26 inches long. Photos should help tell the whole story. Comes with a circa 1920s-30's Gibson string bag and string. Original case also has the original key!!
I assume that this is yours. It looks (back then) to be in amazing shape with exception of small binding shrinkage on the back.

Thanks Jim for this info & great photos I didn't know about the ebay listing, I purchased my Bacon in 2013 & had the small binding shrinkage repaired.
My Bacon is still in excellent condition & is one the the best one I've seen. Your Bacon also looks great but seems more black in color & mine more reddish.
P.S. many years ago I spoke to you about buying your Bacon but you changed your mind, but I still enjoyed speaking to you.
