Having some ideas. Wondering if anyone knows of anyone making solid body octave mandos?
I would really like it to go up a high B (allows you to get into regular mando range in 5th position?)
Any thoughts?

I am having a 5 string octave solidbody being made, It should be done soon. I bought the blue octave solidbody tele in the photo, off reverb and that's how I found them. I think the price is great and they have been great talking to. If you talk to them you can mention me I'm the one that they are making a 5 string octave solidbody mandolin in the shape of an Ibanez jem, sofar the photos I have received are looking nice

I have not found much benefit in double courses for electrics, but of course, that's personal preference. The GDAEB octave, however, I'm a fan of. To me, Jonathan Mann is probably the lead on those. I know I stole a lot of ideas from him for my #13.

Wow! looks great!
Semi-hollow-body? how does it sound "acoustic"?
Still not sure about double courses. So far in recordings they sound "thinner" than I'd like. Again, have not had a chance "in person". My friend made an electric oud with double courses and it sounds great! (he's mostly made guitars and basses, but he's made a few ouds for himself)
Unfortunately, where I am, not a lot of stores carry electric mandolins. :-)
The search continues, and I'm in no rush. need to get better with the "regular" mandolin before I get too crazy.

Our very own John Maddock/Tavy may be another good option, his electrics sound great: https://jzmaddock.000webhostapp.com/
I think I would get a double course one and then experiment with just stringing in singles to see if I liked that more. The option to have doubles would be nice.
Purdy!

For all out tone I would go with either:
* Hollow bodied 5 string, or:
* Hollow bodied 10 string strung in octaves on the G and D courses.
Of course that's purely personal preference!
Oops, meant to link the video, not the picture.
It's semi hollow, with a center walnut log that goes down just past the bridge, and open below that, but there is basically no sound acoustically. This is a straight-up electric, the hollow body is just for tone.
I'm wrapping up a baritone 5 string for Emando.com. It should be ready to go this weekend. I know that he is going to sell it. I am also working on a five string mandocello and have a four string 21" scale in the classifieds. I have tried tuning it to get a high B.
