I've had more risk using dull chisels.

The old tread is my second choice -- I used to run 30 miles a week outside but the old knees and ankles finally just said NO!

Really the treadmill is not bad at all once you work into it of course -- and you feel so good at the end! Hey, why do you keep hitting your head with that stick? Because if feels so good when I stop?

I do 60 minutes at 4 mph on a 15 degree rise -- that works out to about 1000 calories a session if you weight 175 lbs. I do that five days a week with the other two days on the weight machines -- works for me.

Now for the bigger problem -- how to get my finger planes really sharp every time!

So grinding wheels are bad?
Knife makers use belt sanders all the time to shape and grind the blades. This guy used different sander but the basic idea is the same.
I didn't like the lack of heat control. I wouldn't let my good plane blade or chisel grind without at least submerging in water between the grinds to cool down.
What I don't get is that he didn't grind flat and polish the flat side of chisel. He barely removed rust on that side and concentrated on the bevel side only.

Wheels aren't nearly as dangerous as that setup. I'll spend a few extra minutes with a wheel rather than risk injury with that belt sander.

Even with water, it’s very easy to burn a blade, so slow grinders, 1800 rpm, with a while wheel is my preference. I’ve ground lots of molding/shaper knives on that equipment by hand. The fact your hand is unprotected from the abrasive also is too risky for me.

The fact other folks use risky techniques is quite unpersuasive to me.

But feel free to take as much risk as you like.

I think its funny that 1800rpm is called slow, Yes its half the speed of a 3600 , but there is nothing slow about it.
It's Just that you can make ac motors cheaply at 3600 and 1800, after that it gets more expensive and less people want them. If you want a slow wheel, get a motor and pulley it down to much slower.

Remember he is grinding this for construction work, not luthier work. I don't usually grind on anything but a coarse stone. Diamond 220 grit. If I use a jig to hold the blade it is fast enough and won't heat up. Going up from there takes more time.

Yeah, construction, AWI shop, where we got paid for for efficient, high quality work. I apprenticed 40 years ago with guys who had 40 year experience making high quality millwork. Sharpening is a skill, you can use jigs to make it easier, but recognizing risk is important.

1800 rpm is slow, in the vernacular where 7000+ rpm is often encountered and that’s how I learned that.

People can do all kinds of work in all kinds of ways. Luthiers make boxes with sticks. It’s easier when demystified.

I have had days when I could barely walk but rode 20+ miles with my bicycle group, only occasionally going one gear lower. Non-impact, varied scenery, we ride three times a week year round and have our own once a year specialty rides like touring Vancouver Island's Saanich Peninsula or summitting mile high Hurricane Ridge. 9 months of the year there is an event almost every weekend.

The belt sanders like Makita have variable belt speeds of 210 to 440 meters per minute. Compared to that, the 1800 rpm grinder has over 860 meters per minute with 6" wheel and 1150 meters per minute with 8" wheel....
The belt sander moving at that speed is not as risky as it may appear. Some of the handheld belt sanders are actually made to be clamped upside down to bench as well. With finer grits of paper it won't even take your fingerprint away unless you lean on it like crazy.

Yeah bikes are great Greg -- I have a nice one. Problem is where I live (SW Ohio) all the dedicated bike trails are along streams or old train tracks and thus are nearly flat - -you have to ride 30+ miles to get any exercise at all. All the roads through the hilly areas are narrow with sharp, blind curves (dangerous) and the drivers hate you for blocking traffic -- so I gave that up. Love biking though.

We do have some great trails here -- you can bike from Cincinnati to Cleveland if you know the trails!
