    Default String choice

I'm building an octave mandolin with 22.5" scale length. The last one I build was 21" scale length. I found that it required very heavy bass strings. I need to choose a set of strings for the longer scale. I'm hoping I can get away with no larger than .045" on the "g" course. I'd appreciate any comments. Thanks

    That's probably about right.
Here is what emando.com recommends for octave mandolin

I don’t have any recommendations, but D’Addario’s string tension calculator is great tool for coming up with string gauges for oddball scale lengths.
