Default Rules about mahogany & rosewood

Hi folks, I'm selling a Gold Tone Mandola on Ebay. I got a message from a potential buyer in Norway, and this is a question he asked:

"will there be a problem shipping this instrument since it’s made of Mahogny and rosewood? I havn’t ordered any instruments since the new rules about exotic woods."

I know nothing of this. Any ideas?

It's complicated. Here's a listing of endangered and banned/regulated woods.
    https://www.wood-database.com/wood-a...-wood-species/

There are 3 levels of regulation, and Mahogany is in the middle one:
Appendix II – This appendix contains species that are at risk in the wild, but not necessarily threatened with extinction. Species in this appendix are closely regulated, but are typically not as restricted as Appendix I.

Fascinating. Just the other night I was watching an interview with Christian Martin on Pennsylvania Cable Network and he talked extensively of the legal hoops that they have to jump through to insure that the wood is "legit" for both importing raw materials and exporting finished instruments. Its quite involved.

All rosewoods are internationally restricted by the CITES treaty. You cannot ship it across borders without a permit. To find out more, google "cites rosewood questions" and look at the fws.gov web page that comes up.

I believe that there are some US restrictions on the export of "American" mahogany.

Mahogany (honduran) is restricted as raw material, not in finished goods AFAIK. Rosewood is restricted in ANY form and species and requires permit.

Again, google "CITES rosewood questions," and look at the fws.gov page that comes up.

There is a fee for the permit, and it may take several months for the permit application to be approved.

i have sold a couple of rosewood guitars from canada to the usa, but now i am leery. realistically i guess you have to take it over the border by hand as your own instrument (with aback story of the music thingey you are going to and someone there to confirm by phone) then ship within the usa. which i a bummer. indian rosewood only. i have two brazillian rosewood guitars , i would never take them across the border.

it looks to me that hondouran mahagony is also now on category II. so that's a worry now as well.

I wouldn't be surprised that within 10-15 years, private sales of instruments across international borders drops to nearly zero...

True, but only for Indian Rosewood that has been legally sourced from India.
