Very nice inheritance. Play that thing.
If you have a music go round nearby you can get used, good condition hard cases for around $29. I buy most of my cases used.

I have to agree with Mr. Mando. A generic bowl back, even one 100 or more years old, is likely not as valuable as a Gibson A-50 that is in decent shape.

I am quite sure that your grandfather would be very proud to hear that you are making the effort to play his old mandolin. Keep up the good work, and keep us updated.
When Dad died, he didn't have any mandolins, but Mom asked me if I wanted any of his clothes, so we looked in his closet. Nothing was my size, so I just grabbed a couple ties for sentimental reasons. On the top shelf were his old 1950's Converse Chuck Taylor high tops, I smiled and remembered when he played on the company basketball team. I picked one up and saw they were still in near perfect condition, having only seen use on the court. I put it back on the shelf. Again, not my size.....
Years later I was searching for something on eBay and happened to run across vintage Converse "tennis" shoes -- yep, there they were, same model that sells for $1000-2000 a pair............somebody at the local Goodwill store sure got a bargain!
Thank you everyone for all of the information. I couldn’t find the FON number stamped anywhere, but in all honesty it isn’t vital for me to know. The instrument isn’t going to be sold. I am having WAY too much fun learning and it’s so cool to have this connection with my grandpa. I feel like somewhere he is smiling.
If I get photos of the other instruments soon I’ll add them.
I have to go out of town for the week and I loathe to leave it home but I don’t have a secure case yet so I’m going to have to practice my air mandolin this week.
The FON can be hard to see, especially on F holed mandolins. It should be stamped in ink inside either on or close to the neck block. You’ll need to peer, at an angle, with a strong light, in order to find it.
