    Default F style mandolin strap

    Hello there everybody

Got some problems on buying the right strap for my f style Morgan Monroe here in Italy , brought one from Amazon but it seems it doesn't fit in as it has to be good for a snake head mandolin so i gave it back, could it be this one the right one for my own instrument .

    Cheers

Well …. Yes it appears to be able to fit an F5 model mandolin. The question , of course, is "How do you wear your strap". Is it over the shoulder or around your neck? So is the strap long enough. Do keep in mind a 60" 1.5 meter leather boot lace will make a perfectly good strap. I have used one for years. R/

Thanks mate , well i think i would wear it over the shoulder but my problem is where do i have to hook the other side of the strap because it doesn't seem to pass through easily neither under the strings on the headstock nor through the cut on the top of the body.
Do you think that the lace of this one can easily pass through that cut?

    Cheers

I have a Lakota braided strap, and I really like it. Since you have a f style, than the “other end” should go around the scroll.

I just ordered one of those yesterday. One person on this forum loved them (and another thought they looked cheap, lol), but for the price, I couldn't resist at least trying one for a Rogue mandolin that I just bought as a loaner for family and friends who want to try mandolin. The little $49 Rogue plays nicely! I might end up buying a few for my three sons who dabble with music (uke, banjo, sax, guitar) but aren't serious about it. Yet.).

Thanks everybody but wouldn't it be helpful a video tutorial on how to put a strap on a Florentine Mandolin?

That was probably me! ... but on a $49 mandolin .......

Don’t use the word “florentine” Marco. That would, as we say in this part of th EU (at the moment!), open a whole new can of worms!

The scroll end of the strap needs to have a loop. If its simply a piece of cord you could just tie a knot. If its a strip of leather cut a slit near the end and thread the long end of the strap through the slit forming the loop that way. You should, effectively, be able to hang the scroll on the loop or, if things are tight, thread the strap through the scroll first and them through the hole. It’s much easier to do than to explain!

I think you are really over thinking it, just get one and it will make sense in seconds. Trust me.

Just pull it through the scroll and loop it though itself. You may, as already mentioned, be overthinking this.

    I hope this photo helps.

Well that's what i did ,trouble is that that kind of strap doesn't pass through the scroll that's why i bought one with a loop in the end hoping that it will get through it

Ah, that makes sense. Sorry. The Lakota straps are thinner at the loop (a nice nice strap too) and might work for your thin-scrolled mandolin... they are a bit pricey though.

My dog leash is not as wide (1/4-3/8”) as any of the straps you guys are using, I have never liked a wide strap for mandolin. But, it’s just what I like.

How does your scroll look? Is the cut not wide enough to accept the leather (2-3mm thick)?
Insert the thinner end into the scroll and pull it through till the added notched piece is near the scroll and then pull the end through the notch to create loop around scroll.

I have the Lakota braided strap and I love it. First one I bought tore at the strap hole end, but Lakota replaced it no questions asked.

Carter Vintage has the australian straps braided out of kangaroo hide. They braid tighter & smoother than cowhide. They're made by Jo Brooks, (Little Satchel on Facebook). They are top notch!

Don’t they make the mandolin bounce up and down too much?
