Thread: So, was creating a new song...

  1. #1

Default So, was creating a new song...

Sitting on my mandolin, making a song from scratch.

Start by hammering out a basic chord melody, working vocal counterpoints into, considering lyric design, yadda yadda...

Now, that's all fun and good.

So why did, out of no-where, youtube start giving me videos on chord progression and music design?

I had been deep in my mandolin for hours, and when I pop up to take a break, load up youtube, and front page... Videos about writing music!

I avoid paranoia, but a darn well know better than the RNG being this on the nose, this hard. Where is this thing getting it's data?

From Mike Zito - "...very spooky what your computer knows . . . " Not really ,when you consider that almost all the web pages that you look at have some way of tracking you. If you're a Facebook member, when you visit a website, look for the little Facebook logo - if it's there,it's tracking you & feeding info. back to Facebook.

When i open up YouTube,i'm usually faced with lots of Bluegrass clips, because YT knows that's what i look for most of the time,

    I’m familiar with that.

My point was how quickly it changed it’s target subject without a browsing history to direct it. In the time it took to write a song, it decided to feed me subjects I had yet to look up or research in recent history.

That level of predictive decision make borders on godlike, and as a programmer and computer tech, makes me wonder, if, maybe... just maybe, they just have a mic on somewhere to grab a bit of data to help it along.

It might be the new car effect. You buy a new car and suddenly you notice them everywhere!

So ads that you ignored before are suddenly of interest and you notice them.

Just because you're paranoid DOES NOT mean they are not talking about you. For me, that YouTube stuff is like my refrigerator telling me I'm out of milk.........don't want it.

Yeah, that would weird me out too. More specifically it would make me wonder if YouTube were monitoring me through my computer's web cam, especially if these are on-site video recommendations. Guess it would be even creepier if they were advertisements.

(Not serious here. Or not entirely, anyway. Where's the 'tinfoil hat' emoticon when we need it? )

On an iPhone, you can summon up the "helper" app on the phone just by saying, "Hey, Siri!"

What this means is that the phone is continuously listening for you 24/7 ...

I don't know how to get around Google in Youtube, but for searching: Startpage.com adds an anonymous proxy between you and Google. Seems like a good idea.

I once heard the story of a guy who bought a brand new computer - and the first time that he turned it on, it directed him to his usual type of internet content . . . you can't blame YouTube, Facebook or Google for that one!

Also, last weekend I was using a work computer to watch a video on YouTube that I would not normally watch (I was NOT signed in as me, either) - and when I got home, that exact same atypical video was front-and-center on my YouTube home page.

You might want to download and use a different browser like Brave. It blocks all trackers etc. right out the box. (I'm a web developer). https://brave.com/

Cool. But this doesn’t stop big tech from collecting data and tracking me right? Isn’t that the fine print of using the internet?
