    Default Bach Inventions

So, my wife plays cello... I play mandolin (obviously...)

Started looking at Bach 2 part inventions. Super fun!

If you know anyone who plays a bass clef instrument, I strongly recommend taking a swing at them. (suddenly had a mental image of tuba and mandolin... somehow I think it could work )

I looked at the 3 part inventions, possible for bass instrument and 2 mandolins. I'm not sure how the limitations of the clavichord would affect how it would play out on two instruments. I'd sure give it a try if I knew anyone close who played mando.

My guitar buddy and I have worked up a half-dozen or so. To use the written key; however, takes a capo for my skill level!

Mike Marshall & Caterina Lichtenberg published both sheet music and recordings of the 2 parts, with just a few minor alterations to fit the Mandocello and mandolin. They are great fun and good for the technical practice.

You can find music for the two part inventions transcribed for two mandolins, and for mandolin and guitar. I just purchased the music for guitar and mandolin a couple weeks ago, and was pleasantly surprised at the product quality. You'd expect the book itself to be the usual high quality of a Hal Leonard publication, but what surprised me was that the product included two separate high quality folios, one for guitar and one for mandolin, in addition to the book itself which contains all the parts.

Carlo Aonzo and John Carlini, Bach Two-Part Inventions for Mandolin & Guitar, in our cafe newsfetcher from 2014: https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/t...lin-amp-guitar

I had previously purchased a copy of the two-part inventions for the piano, for cobbling solo mandolin efforts, vol. 379 of Schirmer's Library of Musical Classics.

When I was pondering what to buy recently, I saw a Mel Bay publication, J.S. Bach: Two Part Inventions for Two Mandolins by Robert Bancalari as well.

A postscript: Another option is to just play both parts simultaneously on a guitar,

I'm just reading out of the Schirmer.

Of course I've tried reading the 3 part inventions. some of them are even theoretically possible... at 1/32 of tempo.

    :-)

great technical exercise, have to really think about reach and position.

Have been using the upper part from the 2 part inventions for sight reading. Tough and slow, but a great workout.

In the end, my wife and I will use them for performance. Good resource for a ton of material.

In addition to the fine publications mentioned above I put together my own versions of 7 of the 3 part inventions (Sinfonias) several years ago. You can find them at the top of the Arrangements of classical pieces for mandolin-family instruments page of my Mandotopia site. These are arranged for two mandolins and guitar.

Time is always well spent playing Bach on the mandolin.

John, certainly agree on Bach (add singing, which is what I did before my mandolin life began). And I remember struggling through the d minor 3 pt as a beginning piano student and loving it.
But, always on the search for the "right" clef, are these in a format where you or I can easily put them in treble, alto, and bass clefs? I have a couple local players on mandola and mandolin to go with my K4.

    Hello Doc,

Well first I had to find my original files. I last worked on these in 2006. Once I found the Sibelius files it only took a few minutes to change the clefs and double-check the music. The CGDA mandola player gets to play some notes high up on the A string but the cello part allows me to drop a couple of low notes down to where Bach intended them.

So I worked on nos. 3 & 4, D major and D minor. I'll try and attach them here, let me know if this is what you have in mind. I'll get around to the others at some point and add them to the page at Mandotopia as well.

That is exactly what I was looking for, John--thanks so much! Can't wait to try this with my hetero-cleffed friends. Maybe we'll try it at open mic next CMSA--with your permission.
