John Dowland music is wonderful stuff!
One of my favorite CDs of Dowland music is "An Englishman in New York" by Joe Brent & Alon Sariel

That Sting and Eden Karamisov record was my introduction to Dowland. I love it. It caught mixed reviews here. The Joe Brent Alon Sariel is all mandolin and lute bliss.

    John Dowland is pretty addicting.

I especially like how the melodies are constructed. Lots of surprises and changes and yet very comfortable.

My favorite is the song "Come Again". Besides the music being pretty dard delightful, I like that the lyrics are so accessible. It is a real good example.

There is not much in John Dowland's songs that most people to one degree or another haven't felt, thought about, or gone through. We are not fundamentally different from who and how we were 500 years ago. At least to the extent that people then are understandable to people now.

My sleeps are full of dreams,
My eyes are full of streams.
    My heart takes no delight
To see the fruits and joys that some do find
And mark the storms are me assign'd.

I once provided period music for a production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night; the phrase "Come again..." in the script cued me to play that very song. Sand a lot of Dowland's music too, wonderful composer, glad he is getting recognition.

We are practically neighbors--I'm just a few miles up 99W. Want to get together and play some Dowland?
