Thanks, all. Two years in the jazz workshop have introduced me to much of the canon, and to further tunes from some players I knew of but knew little of their music. Mainly, though, it has been a pleasure working with horns, drums, and piano. These are the mainstream of jazz, and I enjoy filling the role of guitar, as an equal partner.
Many sessions lack a piano, and I have learned much of the common chord progressions, the usual cadences and substitutions, and the best voicings. I have also taken inspiration from the other players, and their suggestions as to repertoire. We usually choose about ten or twelve tunes, all offered by our group, and work on them for about three months, which has added up to between 80 and 100 tunes over the two years. We have explored early tunes like Jitterbug Waltz, standards like Moment’s Notice, newer music like Joe Henderson and Cedar Walton, and genre-expanding music from Michael Brecker and Pat Metheny.
I’m looking forward to debuting original tunes with a trio of Washington’s best, the first Sunday in August.
