Default Old ukulele made probably by Italian mandolin maker

    Hello Everybody !

I would like to ask you some help, if you have any idea concerning the Maestro of this small ukulele. It was made before second world war, it was distributed in Hungary by Sternberg music store. The signo of the Maestro is very similar to those on Italian guitars. Probably his/her main profile was guitars and mandolins, ukulele had to be something additional activity. Thank you very much for any help in advance.

What Italian guitars? It looks like the last name is Giulia (possibly). Do you own or have access to this instrument and can take more photos of the signature from different angles in different light. That may help. Looks interesting but I can't imagine that there were lots of ukulele makers in Italy. It does look like it was played quite a bit. Post more pics if possible.

    Dear Jim,

Thank you for your reply. For example D'Orso guitar. I tried to put on som new photo on the ukulele. Giulia is probable, but the oher name is a mystery for me.
    Thanks again for any remarks.

    Kind regards, Szabolcs

That style of circle around the sound hole and an impressed name on the top is typical of Italy or Sicily.

Quite possible, but I also have seen French mandolins with the impressed maker or model name on the top.

My current guess would be Luigi Giuliani—not definite, just a wild guess. It sort of looks to me that the first name on the uke starts with a an L and I am guessing that the imprint might have worn off with playing. I have only one example of small photos from an ebay auction in 2006. The seller says label reads: "Luigi Giuliani, fabbricante di strumenti armonici, S Lucia al Monte, n.49. Napoli." However, no imprint on the soundboard on this mandolin.
