    Default Goals for 2019

Just a thought to review 2018 and new horizons for 2019.

    I had goals for 2018:
    Tremolo-making progress
Sight reading swing lead sheets-some chords still throw me, but much improved
Improv-some improvements in motifs and smoothness of lines

2019-continue with 2018 items, got enough on the plate
    Work on minor keys
    Learn some Choro rhythms

    Anybody else?

That’s actually an easy goal. You don’t have to get any better—just lower you standards and self-shame. That’s what I did.

This is my goal too. As a sink or swim approach I signed up for a Wernick jam camp that starts in about 6 weeks. I am hoping I don't have to go into exile after that

Same goal since 1999: try to find some solo artist or acoustic band to let me play mandolin with them . . . .

Begin learning jazz chords and chord melody on mandolin and guitar. Focus on clean fiddle playing.

Me too, Doc. I know I need to practice more, so hopefully can do that. There are a lot of folks here on the forum who play multiple instruments, used to play, etc. For me, a person who has never played any instrument, had any music lessons, and didn't come from a family with a musical background, it is difficult to stay motivated to practice (probably just me). I am determined not to quit though, so I guess that is a start!

Never been much for goals. I just strive to be disciplined enough to practice scales, arpeggios, and whatever exercises I come across. I also try to be learning new fiddle tunes, then work out arrangements to songs. Going for incremental daily progress.

My goal is to atleast get one hour of practise a day. I wish I would put the same amount of time on playing that I put on watching people on youtube playing 20.000$+ mando's.

Me too, as far as the mandolin goes.

Plus: finish CD #3 and get back on the road.

My goal to get out to local jams more! I have a busy work schedule, plus kids schedules, plus marathon training, and I dont get out for "mandolin time" enough.

Improve my sight reading skills so as to improve my playing with the PMO. I learn nearly all of my music from notation, but sitting in with the PMO makes me realize I need to get much better at pure sight reading with less memorization. This is especially true when playing a contribution to a piece that isn't sounding as I would expect, minus the other sections of the orchestra.
Of course I always want to improve any and all other genres of music I enjoy playing.

To all who are waiting "to get good enough" before venturing out to play with others:
    1. First the bad news - you'll never get there if you want to have X number of songs down that you can play perfectly, or if you want to be able to play error-free, or if you want to get over being nervous, etc.

    2. Now the good news - you're already good enough to play with others if you can watch and listen, smile, and come prepared to have fun and learn.

Enjoying playing music with others is something to start now. Your playing will improve so much quicker, you'll meet others who also enjoy playing, you'll gain a new perspective and motivation on what to work on in practice, and on and on. So many people never enjoy activities with others because they don't want to go through the beginner phase in public. We're surrounded by professional athletes, actors, writers, artists, dancers, musicians and feel we have to reach some minimum performance threshold to participate as an amateur. You dont! Don't sit out the dance anymore! Get out there!

I want to second Mandobart's comment above. It's better to play with others earlier than later. You will learn a lot more when you play with others. As a person who learned how to play at the jam, they always told me they can't hear my mistakes, it doesn't bother them, and they said, how can you learn if you don't play? So I took them up on it. It turns out they are right. I can't hear the mistakes other people make, if I do hear mistakes, it doesn't bother me.

The most wonderful thing in the world is getting over the fear of making mistakes and learning in front of others. Finding a safe group of people where you can do that is worth more than anything.

My own goals are to get more stickers for my case.

2019 goals: Keep going with the Artistworks course I started in November
Try to get to the jam a few more times this year (made it twice last year)
    Get better at tremolo
Be good enough to play a few solo tunes, and get better at improvising

Try to practice and improve. Make whatever band I'm part of sound better through my playing. Be more willing to switch off between mando, OM and guitar depending on the gig and configuration of the group.

But the big one for me - stop trying to chase sound - aka - try and put MAS to rest. Have enough instruments and need to learn to coax out a better tone rather than trading for something different. (Yes, am fighting with myself over getting rid of a couple instruments to get something different.)

2019: Spend more time practicing sight reading. More work on producing harmony lines on the fly.

I once heard someone put it like this: Focus more on better systems and less on goals.

Makes a lot of sense to me.

Without good systems, goals are never achieved anyway. Lots of good intentions in life, not many lasting results. The secret is in good systems, little steps, slow-and-steady-wins-the-race-type thinking.
