Default Tru oil finish got foggy after 3 years- any ideas?

Ok, I build at least 3 years ago and until this week, the finish has looked fantastic. I opened the case and the finish all over the instrument looks frosty or hazy, but it’s not on the surface, it looks like it’s inside the finish layer. Any ideas what could cause that? Until now, I’ve had great results with tru oil

The only thing I can think of is water ingress, but I don't really see how that could have happened after this length of time. Has the instrument had any big extremes of temperature or humidity? Hmm, Michigan... could it have got really cold and then warmed up rapidly?

Moisture is all I can think of too. Have you been humidifying enthusiastically?

If the instrument is at room temperature I'd try warming it gently with a hair drier. Get the whole back pleasantly warm, not hot, and keep it that way for 5 mins or so. Then let it cool and see what happens.

This shouldn't harm it, but if moisture has penetrated it could drive it out. If so, the remedy is to keep the instrument less damp (but still not arid, of course).

Thanks guys. I’ve not humidified at all, but have a meter in my music room and it’s not been too low. I’ll try heating this week.

Did you use anything under the Tru-Oil that might have leached into the top coats?

Was the case ever left where the sun could hit it---- like through a window? The sun is at a low angle now and what seemed like a safe spot before might have changed. I've fogged up a finish when my black case found about 15 minutes of sun.

Has anyone contacted the Tru-oil manufacturer?
