Thread: 1920's Mandolin orchestra with Gibson snakehead+Paddlehead copies

I wonder what the process was for copying a Gibson, considering travel, lack of media, trade, etc. back then. Did someone bring a Gibson from America to be copied at some point?

I say that knowing in the 70's there was a point where the Japanese wanted to make a better copy of a Martin, so they bought a Martin, took it apart, measured it, etc. and started making more accurate copies -- Takamine, Aria, etc.....

I'm wonder in this case, if a "Gibson" was merely copied from a photograph rather than an actual mandolin?

Just a theory, for the sake of discussion.....

Very cool. Especially the one taken at a rather boozy party -- check out the fellow with the shot glass front right and the two guys playing their mandolins violin-style...

Here's kind of a cool pamphlet about mandolin music in Latvia, with a history of the instrument there and some traditional Latvian (plus a few Lithuanian and Estonian) tunes in both tab and standard notation.

They mention several luthiers building mandolins there, but nothing about archtops or Gibson copies:

In the period leading up to World War II, most mandolins used in Latvia had been made in Germany
or Italy, although there were several Latvian luthiers as well, including A. Ieviņš, V. Saulītis, and O.
Zutis, who built both flat and round-backed instruments.
