Preston Thompson guitars and similar mandolin values.

After many years of listening and hair-splitting, I found that of all guitars in the world, the only one I really feel is worth the asking price new, are the PTs with adirondack spruce top and braces, with mahogany back and sides. Preston's typical asking price is about $5100-6200 and after hearing a few samples of his work, I would gladly pay that for the sound.

Now does anyone know any mandolin makers that build such amazing tonal machines for such incredible values? Especially 2 points with adirondack spruce tops and braces, finished with nitrocellulose gloss?

I am a cheap bassard, but if I could own a sound machine like a PT guitar in a mandolin, like the Holy Grail I would be willing to pay a great price.

I wish PT made mandolins, then my search would be over, and my money gone.

Given the rule of thumb that mandolins of equal quality are roughly double the price of guitars, I'm sure you could find something in the 10 to 12 thousand range, assuming you think mandolin builders deserve the same hourly rate.

Yes sir Mr. Sorensen, I have been very focused on yours ever since seeing an adirondack topped sprite you made and the Mandolin store sold. That one really speaks to me and I have you on my short list. You are an amazing builder that pushes the boundaries of what is possible, just like Mr. Thompson. So thanks for weighing in. I am in the preparation stages still on such a purchase, but am very serious. Blessings

for finger style i put marc beneteau for guitars, then ted thompson. beneteau is gaining a major following and they are now expensive. ted thompsons are still ok priced, around $4000 canadian.

mandolins? i traded for a bill davis. first f hole mandolin i really like. normally i am a twenties and teens gibson oval hole guy.

of course michael heiden is great. i knew him in vancouver--everybody did--he was a man about toan in the eighties and noneties and a very good player. his prices are waaaay up there now.

the very best sounding mandolin i have ever played was made by oliver apitius. it was a two point A with oval sound hole, with very nice appointments and sounded fantastic. it was five thou canadian at the 12th frett but i didn't have the money at the time.
