    Default Gibson Mandolin A 1902, repairs completed. Up and playing.

    Ry Charters has finished assembling and repairing my "Oldest factory built Gibson mandolin known to still exist".

    What a piece of history. My eleven years newer A1 looks pretty much like every paddle head that has come along since. Lovely to see the evolution.

    That's a pretty good description of the back. I presume is was too time consuming to make so I think the Gibson factory dropped that design the following year and made it fairly flat. The sides of the bowl are as thin as .040

    Nice! Are the bridge, tuning machines and tailpiece original to that year?

    Nice video, great sounding mandolin.

    Funny, I thought the back looked like a toilet seat lid.
