Just a quick update to say that we took it to Bernie Lehmann in Rochester, NY, and for a reasonable cost, he cleaned it up, repaired the fingerboard cracks, fixed the crack in the top, and restrung it. The only major adjustment was that he had to cut down the bridge a bit. But it's now stable and playable, and has a nice sound!
You went to an excellent luthier and repair person. I'd recommend anyone within hailing distance of Rochester to take advantage of Bernie's skills: Lehmann Stringed Instruments. He built me a five-course, fanned-fret mandolin/dola that's first-rate, also a replica RB-3 5-string banjo neck. His multi-stave ebony-backed guitars are amazing.
