Hey guys,

Newish mando player here. Been playing guitar for years and thought I'd dive into mandolin after failing miserably at bowing on the violin, played intermittently on a Washburn for a few years then played an octave mandolin at a guitar festival up in Tacoma this spring and got hooked. Picked up a Weber octave a few weeks back and can't put it down.

Around the same time I was absentmindedly perusing Goodwill's auction site for any cool antique instruments and came upon a late 1800's Vega mandolin, haven't had a chance to restring and play it yet, but she is a beauty.

Anyway, hello to all, looking forward to really digging into the mandolin going forward.

Don't put anything heavier than "light" strings on it. Maybe even ultra lights. I have a lesser model of almost as old vintage and it does sound nice. I am sure yours will sound at least as sweet.

Thanks! The case is unfortunately coming apart at the seams all over the place, but it's a pretty cool piece all the same. Debating on trying to put a bandaid on it, or possibly pulling the hardware and rebuilding a case.

Threw a set of lights on it Saturday night and everything held up fine. The frets past the neck joint wont play due to the warping, but down low it plays great and has an awesome tone and volume. Checked on it today and it seemed stable, so I'm debating on trying to have my luthier try to address the warping, or just leave it as is and let it be.
