1996 by the usual reckoning. The first two digits are the last two of the year.
There are some other threads on here which discuss this and maybe Mike will stick them in. Hard to do for me thumb typing.
There are a bunch of threads. I believe fatt-dad answered this question in an old thread. I think the pre-Gibson serial number was the first two are the year. Beyond that I'd be guessing.

The above posts are correct. The first two digits in the serial number of the pre-Gibson Flatirons indicate the year it was made. Hence, 1996.

I owned Flatiron Artist Model 85100106. This was built in October, 1985 and was the 106th one made. Following that number scheme, yours was built in January, 1996 and was the 6001st one made.
Should be January 1996. 1st 2 digits are year, second 2 are month. Last 4 are the sequence number.
