Default What's going on at TDPRI?

The tdpri.com Telecaster forum has been shut down for over a day (or maybe it just seems like it), and I'm going through severe withdrawal.

    Anyone know what's happening there?

    =O.

I can get to it. If you can't try clearing your browsers cache.

No, it was down. It's up and running again. Whew!

And today it's celebrating its eighteenth birthday. The beat goes on!

Strat-Talk was down too, supposedly updating.

There was a time I spent long hours over there. Led me to buying a lot of stuff like Glendale saddles and bridgeplates, Don Mare pickups and USA Custom bodies and necks, after which I had four or five homebrew teles. Now when I pick up a real Fender, I go yuck, what an overpriced hunk of junk.

Might be time to go back and see how many more pickup winders there are.

How times change! When we were all "kids," stock teles, strats, les pauls, etc. were the "must haves." I bought my sunburst telecaster new in 1974 from Gerber Music in Syracuse for just under $200.00. Saw Dylan playing one like it and had to have one. A few years later put on a new bridge with single poles to improve the intonation. That was as far as it ever occurred to me to modify the thing. Nowadays, as Br1ck points out, you can spend multiple times the original cost of an instrument on mods, additions and upgrades, not to mention all the additional extra toys and case candy. And to think how happy I was for years with just a straight stock Telecaster!

The beauty of a Tele is its simplicity. If you know your way around a guitar setup, can solder, and wield a rattle can, you can build the equivalent of a custom shop for about $800. That is going extravagant with $200+ pickups, USA custom neck and body, and the best hardware. Scrounge parts and do it for $400.

Now I know that, I'll never buy a poly painted Fender again. Once you gain a little confidence, build your own mandolin. But unlike bolting some boards together, building a mandolin is hard. I don't think a $5k mandolin is overpriced at all. Or even $7k. The hours required justify the price. I can't imagine a USA Tele costing Fender more that $200 to build.

I'm still happy with my straight-stock US Telecaster....

    TDPRI is a great board
