I’ve seen Roman numerals and Arabic numerals in chord charts, but this is the first time to see only a series of dots

Sorry, couldn't figure out how to delete the whole topic when I rediscovered the original discussion, then was called away from the computer for a while, so I replaced content with dots, how do I delete this? Maybe removing this requires a moderator?

Thanks, that's exactly the type of thing I am after.

Sorry for the late reply, for some reason I don't get email notifications from this site.

Sorry for the rather late reply, for some reason I don't get email notifications from this site, was travelling, Covid, etc.

In addition to maudlin mandolin's helpful answer, I found a useful link to a PDF that answers my question exactly the I asked, and includes chords for 8 strings & 10 strings mandolin, which is what I play:

    https://pdfcoffee.com/acordes-bandolimpdf-pdf-free.html

I don't even need to look at the chart unless I have some doubt, all the information I need is in standard music notation.

Don’t worry about it Don, it’s all in fun. I recall your original thread now that it’s been resurrected. For those interested, find it here: https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/t...ndard-notation

Everything at mandoscales is in standard notation, with lots of chord exercises.

    CGDAE included, eg:

    Yes:

    https://mandoscales.com/pdf/

CGDAE versions are on the bottom half of the page. The GDAE and CGDAE versions often have the same name (the CGDAE's will have a "5" added to the name) but are usually different enough that both are useful (as opposed to redundant) — clicking on the image gives you a full view of the first page, so you can have a good look and decide for yourself.

I am one of those weirdos that do better with sheet music than tabs, notation which refers to fingerings and strings with no reference to the actual notes drives me a little crazy.

I have tried to search for material written for the violin as an alternative, but fiddle stuff also uses tab notation, and classical violin stuff seems to have a somewhat different understanding about chords than what is commonly done on the mandolin.

Hard level material is fine, I am hoping to find more than just the basics.

    Thanks for any hints.
If you just need the chords in standard notation, then it shouldn't matter if it's a violin book right? Personally, I would just pickup a piano book since that will have pretty much everything you need.

This has some good ones further in the PDF - http://www.bandworld.org/pdfs/DaveyHandout.pdf

For the positioning of how to play the chords on mandolin, I have not seen a specific book / pdf that covers all chords etc. That said, Aaron Weinstein has a great course on Peghead Nation - he has a great chord library in the I Got Rhythm lesson. You can sign up for his courses here - https://pegheadnation.com/string-sch...aron-weinstein. In general, his charts have standard notation, chord diagrams, and tabs - and since it's jazz based, there's a lot of variety in the chords used in each lesson. Given your request, I'd highly recommend his courses.

I bought the ones previously mentioned above, what is different about this?

    Musically, none.

I have had requests to make the exercises available as a "single file" (all the exercises grouped together into one big pdf) – finally got around to doing it a few weeks ago. This thread resurfaced, and, not being sure what the intention of the original question was, I posted this morning's comment just in case.

    Thanks Don.

It is unfortunate I cannot edit my old comment. Not sure what I was thinking at the time, just because I can play that on the violin doesn't make it beginners violin music, what an insane thing to say, that's college level stuff.

Some of the material under student I don't appear to have, at least not in that form, that's why I was wondering if it was new.

New ones get added now and then. The older ones get updated occasionally too – fingering changes/suggestions, extra info, layout tweaks etc.

As it says in the old song: “must master it by practice, cause it ain’t wrote out in a book”. You simply got to find for yourself forms for at least the most common chord types, forms that connect smoothly and sound good over other instruments, and experiment with them in their various rhythmic roles, held, stabbed, strummed, etc.

When I started out on the mandolin in 1967, after ten years of guitar, I started with melodies (fiddle tunes, polkas, rags) in a few of the most common keys, such as G, C, and F, familiarizing myself with their respective scales and then proceeded to extract chord forms from these scales. I still remember that the first form I found was the chop G form (today I much prefer three-note forms).

I never used tables or diagrams. I did learn a few of those tunes from written scores, to be sure, but I never wrote anything down, except, much later, my own compositions. And working in colloquial genres I took most of my material from recordings or from other people.
