Thread: Forum saving topics

    Default Forum saving topics

Ever see a forum like the Cafe wither and die due to a lack of discourse? Threads that go on forever, some for what seems like the hundredth time hook newcomers and pump lifeblood into the forum. Let's recap our favorite topics for which there is no resolution, thank goodness. Some of my favorites:

    Do I need a scroll?

    Adirondak, better than Sitka?

Blue Chip picks. What makes them the best pick ever?

    Plywood. What makes it better?

A little biased cuz I started this one: what kind of weird stuff do you do while you're playing???... Aka "jam face"... https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/t...are-you-doing?

Thought that was a fun topic!

I've used Blue Chip picks. I like them. However, I just got my first few Wegen picks.

Meh, we're a dynamic forum with many new users who filter in, some stay some leave. Those oft repeated questions are more important to new members and sometimes the answers change over time. The beauty is a the Topic makes it easy to skip if they don't interest you.

PS, You can guess how many times people have replied in those threads that the topic has been discussed before and the person should just search the forum....

Yeah, unless the topic is: "Need help", or "Have you ever", or some other non-helpful phrase.

But are there more BC picks threads or more what's the best mandolin to start on?

    GHS 270 or D'Addario J74?

See, the beauty is there is no answer, the threads will as be irrevalent ten years from now as they are today. But the point is there will be new threads every day asked by sincere folks that haven't done the topic ten times, answered sincerely by retired guys like me with nothing better to do but voice your opinion. The newbie goes out and buys a pack of each string, because somewhere in the thread someone gives this very good advice. Everyone wins.

    up!!!

    Pick guard???

    Arm rest???

I've seen and been a part of a lot of instrument related forums. What makes them die is a lack of participation. Lack of participation is usually due to the results of a lack of administrative attention and administrative participation. That is definitely not a problem here. Personally, I like this forum, it's at or near the top of those I've seen.

I completely agree here. I was involved in BBS before the www and was then drawn to Usenet and forums since there was such a thing. This is absolutely one of the best run forums I have read. While we have to give a good chunk of the credit to those running it, I think it is also has something to do with the types of people interested in mandolins.

The mandolin cafe won't go away unless something better comes along (which is highly unlikely in the foreseeable future).

At least we can all agree that an F style mandolin inherently sounds better than an A style.

It's sort of crazy isn't it since responses to most common mandolin related questions are available simply by using Google, you don't even have to use the website's search engine for Cafe threads to pop up most times.

I would like an easier way to search for an old thread and point the person to the old discussion.

In fact some great discussions are well worth re-reading. And when nothing seems interesting, thoes are the ones to read.
