Very appealing indeed...I haven't had the pleasure of seeing this batch in person but it seems to be another level up in the finishing department. So cool...

Matt is not one to rest on his laurels it seems. Constantly trying new things in the pursuit of getting better; especially with regards to his finishes... Talking to him tonight, he is pretty stoked on the current batch (me too!).

I agree, he constantly lives this stuff 24/7. Love how you can see the wood grain on the face of yours as it is currently I think you are going to be a happy man.

I played it for a few minutes today. Seems really well built. Had a nice chop. Overall really nice.

I'd guess the one at Carters is #21 from this video. It's id'ed in the text accompanying the video on youtube. You could call Carter's and ask what number it is for sure. They all sound great in the video.

Is that damned by faint praise? I'd be curious to know what it sounded like compared to other instruments in in price range. I doubt you only played one mandolin at Carters.

Ha! I didn’t spend a lot of time with it. It did seem to be one of the better in that price range. But this stuff is so subjective.

I recently started a new job that’s about a 5 minute drive from Carters, Cotten Music, and Gruhns. Makes for some fun lunch breaks.

Hey geoffa...thanks for your perspective! You are in the heart of mando and guitar heaven out there. Did you have any favorites you played recently in the stores? I really liked the Wiens i played at Walter's place after playing it awake on the 3rd day. So many great instruments...

That is a really, really tough question. There are currently 139 mandolins, and mandolin family instruments, listed on Carters website. They usually have more in stock than they list on their site as well. The two most memorable ones from last week were a Kimble mandola and a mid-90s Duff. But those were the instruments I went in there specifically to try out that day. Just happened to play a fiddle tune or two on a few others (including the Ruhland).

The advice often given here is to play things for yourself, or buy on approval, to make sure the instrument is what you’re looking for. I wholeheartedly agree with that. My impression re: the Ruhland is sincerely positive. Wouldn’t want anyone to misconstrue my comments as anything else. I’m a fan of independent luthiers. Matt Ruhland is one I continue to keep an eye on and consider for a future purchase.

I was at a camp with my daughter last month. My instructor had an early Ruhland F5. It sounded great and was really woody and powerful.

In the beginning of the Ruhland mandolin thread of the past I inserted a recording. Afterwards, i was asked "how the highs sound on that mandolin". I hadn't really noticed that in fact i had more or less played my "solo" on the lower range of the instrument. I want to offer an example of how a typical Ruhland F5 sounds with slightly more focus on the "highs" of the instrument.

    * This mandolin was completed in May of this year.

    * the music is an attempt to play something that would help my 6 month old Nephew go to sleep. Thanks for your indulgence.

Very nice tune, played with great touch and dynamics.

The highs on the mandolin sounded to me full and sweet, not thin or shrill.

Lovely tune, well played. The mandolin sounds wonderful!

Thanks Luna & Kevin...the mandolin has everything i have wanted in a F5. Power, cutting highs that are not shrill, plays very well, sounds vintage right out of the box. It feels like another era. It's striking just how good the instrument is after 2.5 months.

As an aside...awhile ago I touched base with Jim from Mass St Music in Kansas. He is someone that taught me and a friend of mine a great deal about quality instruments when we were kids going to college in Lawrence. His store at that time was called Michigan St Music, i want to say(might be wrong, i'm old and forgetful). Anyway, out of respect for Jim i plan on shipping one of my Ruhland's back there for a short period of time so Jim can check it out, just for fun. I'm going back to see my folks and i'll stop and pick it up afterwards.

If anyone from the cafe lives in that area you are welcome to try it out if you are interested. (It's not for sale)

    Cheers..
