Beautiful mandolin Evan. Matt has hit his stride. I get to meet with him this weekend to see progress on my A5 while in Portland for Bridgetown. When I spoke to him a few days ago he was hoping to have my top (1pc bridge sitka) voiced. Gonna be a good weekend. Congrats to all who got in on the new batch! I do believe the Ruhland star is rising.

Thanks Willem - enjoy the weekend up in Portland and your visit to Matt's shop. I saw the A5 tops in progress and they are looking good. The Bridgetown festival will be fun - great line up of Pacific Northwest bands!

I had the pleasure of spending an hour and a half upstairs at one of the premier Nashville music stores today.
I'll be returning Monday to play mandolin's. Today, I watched the owner of the store play Ruhland #33, the entirety of my time there. The gentleman just wanted to keep playing it. He appeared impressed.

My visit with Matt and #41 to be was great. Matt was pretty happy about the road trip you mentioned Old Growth.

Congrats Willem...I have been eyeing that back on your A5 for awhile. It's going to be beautiful.
My Nashville experience has been terrific and eye opening. Thus far what I recall playing includes the following:
    Gil-2008 F5
    3 Red Diamond's
    3 Duff's
    Ellis F5
    Kimble A5
    Nugget/Tim O'Brien A5
    Wiens F5 w/Version
    Austin Clark F5
    Purchase F5
    Givens F5
    4 Northfield F5's
    Gibson master model/several F5's
    Dan Voight A5
    Altman F5
    Rattlesnake Mandola
    Hanson F5
    Green F5

Probably some I have forgotten as well... tomorrow morning I will pickup my Ruhland F5 from the music store owner who spent the weekend with it.
Should be another day of fun with/lots of pick'in

I would love to here some of your thoughts on comparison to the Ruhland; whether here or in a private message. The new F5 I was able to play yesterday had it going on!

I'm not sure what I expected going to play Mandolins in Nashville. What I can say is the Ruhland belonged in each room.

Really enjoyed playing my first Kimble two point today. Have also become a big Tom Ellis fan.

Ruhland #33 which is 5 days old was passed around at the Opry Saturday night. I was informed it was highly enthusiastic reception. Cool...

Can you elaborate? Jamie has been dinged in these fora for his business practices in the past, but not for the quality of his builds. That F5 certainly looks the part.

It just has everything is the only way I can describe it. Exceptional build quality, powerful low end, very strong mids and sweet, cutting highs. I personally have only seen a few instruments(a very few) that had the entire balance across the spectrum without taking away from one side or the other i.e take away from the low end to accentuate the highs or vice versa. Plays exceptionally well, outstanding tone...on and on...the thing that probably shocked me the most is that it also has a Verzi. I thought that might reduce its volume or whatever. Its definitely a life long instrument in my small view of the (instrument) world.
    * I have dealt with Jamie before. He has treated me fairly.

....I don't have any financial interest at all in the instrument.

Just thought I'd post a quick shot from a gathering at Matt's shop this week of the new owners of his most recent batch. It was cool to see and hear them all togetherClick image for larger version.

We need more than one photo and one sentence about a gathering like that.

Hi Don...although i don't have any photos of the Ruhland "fest" I was able to be there. My experience was one of thinking that each F5 was better than the last one. Crazy...

I am curious how folks define "dark tone"? That appears to be the direction Ruhland #33 is heading. I've not had an instrument with what I would describe as dark tone. It's definitely attractive and completely different from the Wienman I play. Thanks for your knowledge.

I will take a stab at it. The lows are a bit more prominent than the highs. More growling than sharp and cutting. Also very full and deep sounding.

    Hi Folks,
I have been wanting to post a recording of the new Ruhland F5(#33) that I have. Is it possible to post just the sound file without the associated video from Dropbox? I'm fairly certain no one needs to see me sitting on my sofa in my old man PJ's. Just thinking the Mando might sound better minus the visual distraction.

    Nice. Warm and resonant.

Sounds like a wool sweater and whiskey.

Great tone... carries a lot of a Gibson L5 guitar in the mids.

    Nice playing, OG!

Thanks for giving Matt's mandolin a listen Luna and Kevin. I appreciate your input. It's one of those instruments that has much more to offer than I can bring out presently. I would love to see it in the hands of a better player just to sit and listen.....

Thank you Matt, that is a fine offer As much as I enjoy Montana it looks like i won't have to travel that far to sit and watch a real musician play number 33. Happily I have learned that one of the finest Bluegrass Mandolin players on the planet is visiting/performing in the town I live in a week or so. It looks like #33 will be offered up for a test drive my this Master...very..very cool!
