I am just wondering if this thread really belongs to the Videos and pictures section of the Cafe. There is no doubt that Matt has a following and good luck to him.

Sorenson mandolin pictures and news for instance are posted there. It is only fair that other small builders get a guernsey. I am not sure that it is a general discussion topic.

Here is some video of Matt playing my #41. I will add video of myself over the weekend. If someone knows how to attach this video differently or to get it out of the iphone format, please let me know.

That must have been quite a treat sitting down with all of them. Did they sound similar to one another, or did they have different personalities? How were the necks? Beautiful looking fit and finish! That’s some serious mandolin porn right there!

Are these all spoken for, or will some be available?

Definitely a treat and for whatever reason Matt's mandolins always sound nearly identical. There are some subtleties sure but very very similar. Its always been one of the aspects of his work that caught my attention. At the same time they all have their own personalities but that's primarily the looks of each, tonewoods, inlay etc. Necks feel great, big sound, excellent play-ability, smooth.
it would seem inappropriate to me to post available instruments in the discussion sections. These all have homes. Glad you enjoyed the photos.

My buddy picked up #42 yesterday. Won’t leave the house for a while, but I know the way there. She’s waited a while since she missed the last batch, so I’m very happy for her. Tammy and the Tomcats will be really rocking.

I brought #41 home today. I will post a comprehensive review and sound clip later, but this mandolin is great! Less than a week old, it is loud, balanced, with very clear bell like noting.

One from the recent batch is available at Greg Boyd's. I believe this was built specifically to be sold at Greg's. NFI, just throwing this out there for anyone who may be interested as Matt's wait list has gotten lengthy.

Played #42 over the weekend, a very nice mandolin with very cool inlay on the pegged and matching on the fingerrest. Loud and punchy. It got to go to its first festival over the weekend and was played for all hours. I believe there were 3 other Ruhland's there as well, all very fine.

Also got to speak with Matt for a while and he's doing a batch of F's now. A very nice fellow. I'm just admiring, can't really add to my herd, but they are all very nice.

I crossed paths with Matt, too, this past weekend in Tygh Valley, Oregon. Not sure what number the A5 I played was but it was a dandy. Super nice guy and a great builder, too. Got to pick a few tunes with Matt and some of his music buddies. He’s also a very fine and creative banjo player.

#37 arrived a week ago. Enjoying getting to know it and what it has to offer which is a lot. My Heiden is jealous right now. Will make a recording whenever I get some time--it already inspired a new tune. Taking it to a weekend jam tomorrow. I need a very specific neck profile and Matt got it right. Great guy to work with. These photos are light--it has a beautiful burst that's darker than the pics and less red/yellow than the pics.

Nice A5 Don, thanks for posting. How would you compare your Heiden(which sounds great on recordings I have heard) to your new A5?

The Heiden is 9 years old and has a more complex and mature voice. Really not a fair comparison. The Ruhland's really amazing for brand new and has a lot going for it already. I think it needs some serious playing time and it should get it this weekend. It's definitely closer to the Heiden tone than it is to the Gibson tone. Maybe a bigger low end than the Heiden--lots of volume and similar clarity. A real joy to play--hard to put down. Matt really got the neck shape right which makes it extra special for me.

Cool. What is the top wood, if you don't mind my asking?

I went with the old bridge sitka--Matt seems to really like how that wood works for mandolins.

Beautiful mandolin Don, truly. I love A5's. I have been flirting with the idea of simply keeping and playing only my Ruhland A5. Probably can't let go of the other mandolins I enjoy so much but I wonder if only playing one instrument exclusively is the Holy Grail of playing.

Don Grieser, fromreading your previous posts I believe you and I share a preference for similar neck dimensions.

Are the Ruhland and Heiden's necks similar?

Have you played an Ellis for neck comparisons?

String spacing at the bridge is another big factor with me.

I can see why Matt is probably up to his ears in sawdust. Good on him.
